Data Privacy Rule Actions

Rule actions are the objects that acts on the data and disguise them. Rule actions determine what will happen when a rule is executed. You can view a list of rule actions for an open project. To see the list of available rule actions, click the Rules tab. From this list, you can add, edit, rename, delete, or reorder selected rule actions.

To work with your rule actions:

  1. Open the desired repository and project.
  2. Click the Rules tab, and select the desired rule. The list of existing Rule Actions for that rule appears in the Rule Actions tab portion of the window.
  3. To define the actions to be applied when using this rule, click Add. The Create Rule Action wizard appears.
  4. Select one of the following types of rule actions and click Next:
    • Encryption: This type of rule action encrypts or decrypts your data using a managed key or by entering a key value. You can select data elements or variables to be included in the rule action, or enter a field mask for the selected items. For more information, see Format-Preserving-Encryption-Rule-Actions.
    • Translation: This type of rule action replaces data to be disguised with data from a previously created translate table. For more information, see Translation-Rule-Actions.
    • Composite: This type of rule action disguises parts of your data using a composite field definition. You can select data items and map them to data elements. The data will be disguised based on the data element mapped to the data item. For more information, see Composite-Rule-Actions.
    • Overloaded: This type of rule action disguises data based on the condition specified for the data element. For more information, see Overloaded-Rule-Actions.
  5. To remove a rule action, select the desired rule action in the table and click Delete. It no longer appears in the list of rule actions for the selected rule. A rule action cannot be deleted if it is in use by the rule logic; a warning message will be displayed.
  6. To reorder your list of rule actions, select the desired rule action and click Up or Down to change its order in the list. Rule actions are executed in the order you specify here unless rule logic is defined. If rule logic is defined, rule actions are executed based on the logic defined. When rule logic is used, if a rule action is defined but not included in the rule logic, it will not be executed.

The results of rule actions are cumulative. This means that each rule action operates against a record that includes all of the changes made by the previous rule actions.
