Browse, edit, delete, and properties for z/OS UNIX files


The Host Explorer can be used to invoke some basic viewing of z/OS UNIX files.

To add a filter for z/OS UNIX Files

Host Explorer filters are used to define a set of resources to view in the Host Explorer view.

  1. In the Host Explorer view, right-click z/OS UNIX Files and select Add Filter. The Filter dialog box appears.
  2. Enter the filter, which can include any of the following:
    • The tilde character (~) to designate the home director The filter created using the tilde character (~) will be automatically converted to the full path of the home directory.
    • A path to a directory or file Paths usually begins with a forward slash /, for example, /u.
    • A path with an asterisk character (*) as the last character to match wildcard files or directories
  3. Click OK to add the filter. The filtered results display all of the resources on the system that match the filter.

    Important

    Filters can only be created for file paths to which the user has permission. Filters are case-sensitive. Quotation marks should not be used within filters. If a connection has not previously been established with the host, the Login dialog box will appear and prompt for credentials.

To browse z/OS UNIX files in Host Explorer

  1. Establish a connection to a mainframe system.
  2. In the Host Explorer view, right-click the file and select Browse to view the file in browse-only mode. If the file is untagged, the Browse Using Encoding dialog box appears.

    Important

    You can see the Browse Using Encoding dialog box if you have selected the Prompt to choose encoding option in the Preferences dialog box (Windows> Preferences > BMC > Editors). By default, this option is selected. If you do not want to see this prompt you can select Use default encoding, don't prompt option.

  3. Select the required file encoding option to tag the file with an encoding type.
  4. Click OK. The file opens in the editor in read-only mode.

Important

Alternatively, select Browse With and choose the editor with which to browse the file. If the file is untagged, the Browse Using Encoding dialog box appears.

To edit z/OS UNIX files in Host Explorer

  1. Establish a connection to a mainframe system.
  2. In the Host Explorer view, right-click the file and select Edit to view the file in edit mode. If the file is untagged, the Edit Using Encoding dialog box appears.


    Important

    You can see the Edit Using Encoding dialog box if you have selected the Prompt to choose encoding option in the Preferences dialog box (Windows> Preferences > BMC > Editors). By default, this option is selected. If you do not want to see this prompt you can select Use default encoding, don't prompt option.


  3. Select the required file encoding option to tag the file with an encoding type.
  4. Click OK.

Important

Alternatively, select Edit With and choose the editor with which to edit the file. If the file is untagged, the Edit Using Encoding dialog box appears.


To browse z/OS UNIX files using the Browse Using Encoding option

  1. Establish a connection to a mainframe system.
  2. In the Host Explorer view, right-click the file and select Browse Using Encoding... option to tag the file with an encoding option and view the file in browse-only mode. The Browse Using Encoding dialog box appears.

    Important

    If the selected file is already tagged with any encoding option then, the file encoding option will be selected by default on opening the Browse Using Encoding dialog box. If the selected file is not tagged to any encoding option then the default EBCDIC option will be selected. 

  3. Select the required file encoding option to tag the file with an encoding type. 
  4. Click OK.

To edit z/OS UNIX files using the Edit Using Encoding option

  1. Establish a connection to a mainframe system.
  2. In the Host Explorer view, right-click the file and select Edit Using Encoding... option to tag the file with an encoding option and view the file in edit mode. The Edit Using Encoding dialog box appears.

    Important

    If the selected file is already tagged with any encoding option then by default, that file encoding option will be selected, when the Browse Using Encoding dialog box appears. If the selected file is not tagged to any encoding option then the default EBCDIC option will be selected. 

  3. Select the required file encoding option to tag the file with an encoding type.
  4. Click OK.

To delete a z/OS UNIX file or folder

  1. In the Host Explorer view, right-click the file or folder and select Delete. The Delete dialog box appears showing a list of the files or folders selected for deletion and their types.
  2. Click Delete. The results of the delete request appear in the Results column of the Delete dialog box. The resources involved have been updated in Host Explorer.
  3. Click Done to exit the dialog box.

To view folder or file properties

Right-click the folder or file in the Host Explorer view and select Properties. The Properties tab appears showing the properties that apply to the folder or file and their values.
