z/OS Dataset and z/OS UNIX Modes

When displaying z/OS and z/OS UNIX data, in addition to Formatted Table Mode and Formatted Row Mode, there is one other display: Unformatted Table Mode. The Layout Formatted and the Unformatted tabs at the lower left corner of the data display allow you to switch display modes.

Important

  • Layout formatted modes are only available when using record layouts. When no record layouts are provided, the initial display is Unformatted Table Mode and no Layout Formatted tab is provided.
  • Formatted Table Mode is not available when using record layout cross reference (XREF), only the Formatted Row Mode is available, and it uses all of the data display area for presentation of record data.

Single Layout

When using a single layout, all data display modes are available.

Important

One exception though includes the layouts with large ODO max-counts, that can potentially match records with over 32,767 fields.  Such layouts are not common but are sometimes used with PL/1 unbounded arrays or nested ODO groups.  In such scenarios, the Formatted Table Mode is not available, and the Formatted Row Mode uses all of the data display area.

Upon initial entry to the data display, file data is presented in Formatted Table Mode, where each column of the matrix represents an elementary field in the layout, and each row in the matrix represents a record in the file. Each cell contains a value formatted based on the record layout field attributes for that field in a record. In Edit mode, click in the cell to begin editing the value. The value you enter must conform to the format of the field or it will be considered an error. Use the image2021-9-29_11-19-50.png icon at the top right to invoke the Formatted Row Mode display.
