Z/OS_Allocate a dataset

Use Host Explorer's "Allocate" functionality to create a new VSAM, IAM, or Sequential dataset or PDS member and define all values for it. Use the "Allocate Like" functionality to create a new dataset with the values of another specified dataset.

To allocate a dataset

  1. Do one of the following:
    • To allocate a PDS or Sequential dataset:
      • Right-click z/OS Datasets and select Allocate/Define>PDS or Sequential Dataset.
      • From the File menu, select New, toggle open the node, select PDS or Sequential Dataset, and click Next.
    • To allocate a VSAM or IAM dataset:
      • Right-click z/OS Datasets and select Allocate/Define>VSAM Cluster.
      • From the File menu, select New, toggle open the node, select VSAM Cluster, and click Next.
    • To allocate a generation dataset (GDS):
      • Right-click a GDG base and select Allocate Generation Dataset.
      • Right-click z/OS Datasets, select Allocate/Define>PDS or Sequential Dataset, and enter in the Dataset name field <GDG base dataset name>(+1).
      • From the File menu, select New, toggle open the node, select PDS or Sequential Dataset, click Next, and enter in the Dataset name field <GDG base dataset name>(+1).
    • To allocate a dataset with the values of another dataset, right-click the desired dataset listed under z/OS Datasets and select Allocate Like. The Allocate wizard page appears with fields populated by the corresponding attributes of the selected dataset.
  2. Complete the fields on the wizard page.

    Important

When allocating a VSAM or IAM dataset, note the following:

    • The Region share option list has the following options:
      • 1-All users read but only one can read and write to the dataset concurrently
      • 2-All users read and one can write to the dataset concurrently
      • 3-All users read and write to the dataset concurrently
      • 4-All users read and write to the dataset concurrently and the user program must use ENQ/DEQ
    • The System share option list has the following options:
      • 3 - All users read and write to the dataset concurrently
      • 4 - All users read and write to the dataset concurrently and the user program must use ENQ/DEQ
      • The $IAM radio button is used to select to use Innovation Data Processing's Innovation Access Method (IAM), a high-performance index-accessed method for z/OS operating systems, which offers advantages over the IBM-provided Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM). Additionally, a VSAM dataset can be changed to an IAM dataset by entering $IAM anywhere within the target's name shown in the Cluster name field of the Allocate wizard page. The IAM service needs to be running on all LPARs being used.
    • Do the following:
      • If allocating a dataset, click Finish.
      • If allocating a dataset like another dataset, click Next, complete the fields on the second wizard page, then click Finish.

A message indicates that the dataset was allocated. Refresh any matching collapsed filters if necessary to see the newly allocated dataset.
