File-AID Data Editor Icons
Below is a description of the icons on the File-AID Data Editor icon bar and in other areas of the window. Some of the icons may not always appear depending on whether you are in Criteria Selection, Browse, or Edit mode and where the cursor is located.
The Edit or Browse mode must be active to view and use the icons in the icon bar, and not all icons are available or activated in Browse mode. Many of these icons have keyboard shortcuts. For information about these shortcuts, see Shortcut Keys.
Save: Saves the changes you have made during this editing session. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+S and is only available in Edit mode.
Save All: Saves the changes you have made during this editing session. If multiple objects are open, this will save all of them. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S and is only available in Edit mode.
Hex Display: Clicking on the hex display control toggle will turn off 3-line hex display if it is on and turn it on if it is off. The appearance of the control changes slightly when clicked. Hover your cursor over the hex display toggle control and a tool-tip will appear showing the current mode (on or off) of the 3-line hex display.
Visualize DBD: Clicking the Visualize DBD button invokes the File-AID for IMS Visualizer to create and display a graphical representation of the IMS database description (DBD) currently opened for browse or edit.
Insert Row: Insert a new row after the selected row. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+I and is only available in Edit mode.
Insert Multiple Rows: Insert more than one new row after the selected row. Selecting this option opens the Insert Multiple Rows dialog box where you can specify the number of rows to add. For more information, see Insert Multiple Rows. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+I and is only available in Edit mode.
Repeat Row(s): Repeat the currently selected row(s) one time. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+R and is only available in Edit mode.
Repeat Row(s) Multiple times: Opens the Repeat Row(s) Multiple Times dialog box. Enter the number of rows to be repeated. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+R and is only available in Edit mode.
Delete Row: Deletes the selected rows. Keyboard shortcut is Delete key and is only available in Edit mode.
Undo: Allows you to undo a single row. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Z and is only available in Edit mode. This icon is only activated if you are on a row that has been modified, because only the selected row will be reverted to its original state. You do not have to Undo changes in the order that the changes were made.
Undo All Changes: Cancels all of the changes you made during the current Workbench for Eclipse session. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+Z and is only available in Edit mode.
Undo SQL: If you manually edit your SQL, you can no longer go back and continue to use the automated selection criteria. However, if you have not yet saved your manually-created SQL, you can click the Undo SQL icon and return to the Selection Criteria window.
Bookmark Row: Bookmarks the selected row. After bookmarks are specified, you can navigate to selected bookmarks. Bookmarks are only kept bookmarked for the current editing session and the current page when multiple pages are available. Bookmarks are reset when you navigate to another page or exit the table. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+B.
Remove Bookmark: Clears bookmarks in the selected rows.
Remove All Bookmarks: Clears all of the bookmarks you have previously set. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+B.
Hide Row/Rows: Hides the selected rows for this editing session. If you hold the mouse over the marker
showing that rows are hidden, it will tell you how many rows are hidden. You can unhide those rows by clicking on the (Unhide) link in the tool tip following the text indicating the number of hidden rows. Hidden rows are only kept hidden for the current editing session or the current page if multiple pages are available. If you navigate to another page or exit the table, hidden rows are restored for viewing. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+H. In row mode the following indicators are displayed to indicate hidden row status.
Hidden row above: A hidden row exists above the current row.
Hidden row below: A hidden row exists below the current row.
Hidden row above and below: Hidden rows exist above and below the current row.
No hidden rows: There are no hidden rows above or below the current row.
Unhide All: Redisplays all hidden rows. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+H.
Flip: Hides all displayed rows, displays all hidden rows.
Hide Column: Hides the selected columns. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+J.
Show All Columns: Redisplays all hidden columns. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+J.
Freeze Columns: Opens a dialog box that allows you to specify which columns to freeze. If you choose a column to freeze other than the first column, the Editor rearranges the selected column to the first column position where it remains visible while you scroll the other columns on your screen.
Unfreeze Columns: Unfreezes the selected columns and returns columns to their original position.
Find: Clicking the binoculars opens the Find/Replace dialog box. For more information, see Find-Replace. Click Find again to find the next occurrence of the specified data. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+F.
Clear All Filters: Removes all filters that are currently set. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+C.
Column Chooser: Opens the Column Chooser dialog box, which can be used to hide columns as well as reorder the display of columns. This dialog box contains a list of all of the columns in the table. The Available Columns area of this dialog box displays a list of all columns that are available for display but have not been selected for display. Any columns in the Available Columns areas are treated as hidden columns and are not displayed in the normal data display.
The Selected Columns area of the Column Chooser dialog box displays a list of all columns that are selected for display. You can use the left and right arrow buttons to move columns from one area to another. You can use the up and down arrow buttons to rearrange the order of the columns in the list. Click Done for the changes to take effect.
Auto Resize: Adjusts the width of all columns — including those in the Row Mode display, if visible — to the size of the largest field in each column.
Paging: Allows you to navigate through the database. Choices include:
First Page: Navigates to the first page. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+PageUp.
Previous Page: Scrolls backward one page. Keyboard shortcut is PageUp.
Next Page: Scrolls forward one page. Keyboard shortcut is PageDown.
Last Page: Navigates to the last page. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+PageDown.
- Navigation - IMS: Allows you to navigate through the database. Choices include:
Root: Repositions to the Root segment of the current segment. If the current segment is a root, no repositioning occurs.
Parent: Repositions to the Parent segment of the current segment. If the current segment is a root, no repositioning occurs.
Twin: Repositions to the next segment in the database that is the same type as the current segment.
Child: Repositions to the next segment in the database that is a Child of the current segment.
Go To Segment By Key: Associated with the Go To Segment By Key menu item for IMS. For more information, see Go to Segment by Key - relocating to a specific segment.
Primary Key and Foreign Key: Either or both in a column heading indicate that the column is a primary key and/or a foreign key.
- Navigation - All Data types: Allows you to navigate the current page of data. Choices include:
Go to First Row: Navigates to the first row on the current page. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Home.
Go to Last Row: Navigates to the last row on the current page. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+End.
Go to Next Row/Record/Segment: Navigates to the next row of data.
Go to Previous Row/Record/Segment: Navigates to the previous row of data.
Go to Specific Row/Record/Segment by Row: Displays a dialog box where you can type in an explicit row number to navigate to.
Go to Bookmark: Navigates to the selected bookmark. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+G.
- Segmented XREF: Allows you to navigate segmented XREFs.
Prev Segment: Returns to the previous segment.
Next Segment: Advances to the next segment.
Add Segment: Inserts a new segment.
Remove Segment: Deletes an existing segment.
Layout Control Menu: Provides access to additional dialogs for controlling layouts to use for mapping segment data as follows:
- Assign Layout: Designates a layout for a record segment.
- Position Temporary Layout: Formats data at any location using a chosen layout.
- Display Segment Layouts: Displays a dialog of metadata showing all segments in the current record.

File Search: These icons are a default option provided by Eclipse and are NOT applicable to the File-AID Data Editor.
Row Editor Toggle: Opens and closes the Row Mode display.
Export: Toolbar icon for exporting the contents of the data display to a local file in your choice of four different formats. With the exception of XML export, you can only export one segment when working with either IMS data or an XREF with MVS data.
- Edit Status Indicators: The following icons indicate the status of edits in Table Mode. Row Mode icons are the same, except the Insert is pending, Update is pending, and Delete is pending icons include a two-word description (Pending insert, Pending update, or Pending delete).
Insert is pending: Data is a newly inserted or repeated row of the page. Undo is active.
Insert is pending (IMS): Data is a newly inserted or repeated row of the page. Newly inserted IMS segments may not be displayed in the correct key sequence location within the page. Undo is active.
Inserted: A row has been inserted and saved back to the mainframe. Its position in the physical data is committed but not shown in its correct sequence in the display until the display is refreshed via paging or relocation.
Update is pending: Data is an updated row of the page. Undo is active.
Delete is pending: Data is a row of the page flagged for deletion. For IMS, when a parent segment is deleted, all dependent children segment are also flagged for Delete. Undo is active.
Error during save: During a save of changes to the data, an error was detected. Hover over this icon to view the error.
Bookmark: This row has been bookmarked.
Warning indicator: Messages detailing the warnings are presented in a dialog box by clicking on this status icon.
Shortcut Keys
The File-AID Data Editor provides a number of shortcut key combinations to make your use of the product more efficient. You can view the list of shortcuts from the program by selecting Help > Key Assist. The list that appears shows only the shortcuts that apply to the Workbench for Eclipse view that is active.
Some of these shortcuts have icons on the icon bar to perform the task. For more information, see File-AID Data Editor Icons.
Not every shortcut is available for every active File-AID Data Editor view.
