Create a New Source Data Identifier

The identification process matches the source data identifiers defined in the data element to the field and column names defined within the metadata. The following instructions will help you to create the desired source data identifiers to complete your data element definition.

Important

To create a new source data identifier:

  1. Select and open the desired repository and project from the Rules Explorer view.
  2. Select the Data Elements tab for the open project. The Data Elements view appears.
  3. Select the data element that you want to create the source data identifier for.

    Important

A data element must be created and selected before a source data identifier can be created for it.

  4. Click Add next to Source Data Identifiers. The Create Source Data Identifier Wizard appears showing the Name and Fields view.
  5. On the Name and Fields view, fill in the fields. For a description of these fields, see Data Identifier - Name and Fields View.
  6. Click Next. The Restrictions view appears.
  7. If desired, the identifier can be restricted to only identify data from a specific metadata source type. Choices include: NONE, DBMS, or LAYOUT. Fill in the fields for the selected view. For a description of the fields on these views, see Data Identifier - Restrictions View (NONE), Data Identifier - Restrictions View (DBMS), or Data Identifier - Restrictions View (LAYOUT). The LAYOUT restrictions view applies to COBOL, PL/I, and IMS.
  8. Click Next. The Processing Options view appears. The exact processing options available are based on the processing type of the data element. The options selected on the source data identifier will override the options specified on the data element. See the applicable Source Data Identifier Processing Options topic for more information:
  9. Determine whether you need additional source data identifiers for this data element. If so, repeat the above steps.
  10. Click Finish to save your source data identifier.
