Automatically importing dumps

You can customize the Abend-AID Viewer to automatically import the types of SVC dumps described below. Automatic import requires the MVS post-dump exit.

You can also specify whether dump analysis is run against dumps when they are automatically imported. You may want to specify that analysis is not automatically run in order to save time and overhead when a dump is automatically imported. You can manually analyze a dump after it is imported by using the Abend-AID Directory A (Analyze) line command. See Modify Region Dump Profiles for more information.

Perform the following tasks:

Task 1:  Automatically import dumps taken to SYS1.DUMPxx data sets

The Abend-AID Viewer does not automatically import dumps directly from SYS1.DUMPxx data sets. Instead, it allocates another data set, copies the contents of the SYS1.DUMPxx data set into the new data set, and then imports the copied data set.

For this process to occur, you must do the following:

  1. Install the MVS post-dump exit, as described in MVS Post-Dump Exit Installation.
  2. Modify your SVC dump capture profiles to indicate which SVC dumps are to be taken to SYS1.DUMPxx data sets, copied, automatically imported and analyzed. Make sure you also specify a data set naming pattern for the dump copy data sets. SVC dump capture profiles are described in Modify Region Dump Profiles.

Task 2:  Import automatically allocated dump data sets

z/OS provides a facility to take SDUMPs directly to user-defined data sets, bypassing SYS1.DUMPxx. The Abend-AID Viewer can be customized to automatically import and analyze these “automatically allocated” dump data sets.

For this support, you must do the following:

  1. Install the MVS post-dump exit, as described in MVS-post-dump-exit-installation.
  2. Modify your SVC dump capture profiles to indicate which SVC dumps are to be taken to automatically allocated data sets, imported, and analyzed. SVC dump capture profiles are described in Modify Region Dump Profiles.

Note

On the Region Dump Profile screen, specify a dump type of SYS1 for automatically allocated dump data sets. The Abend-AID Viewer recognizes that SYS1.DUMPxx has actually been bypassed, determines the name of the automatically allocated data set, and imports it.

Task 3: Automatically Import Console Dumps

To invoke automatic import for a console dump, do the following:

  1. Install the MVS post-dump exit, as described in MVS Post-Dump Exit.
  2. Use the following MVS system command to invoke the console dump:
    DUMP COMM=(AAVWR DUMP: SYSTEM=mvssys,JOB=jjjjjjjj)
The dump title must be at least AAVWR DUMP: SYSTEM=mvssys. The AAVWR DUMP portion of the title is sufficient to cause the MVS post-dump exit to start the automatic import procedure. For the Abend-AID Viewer to find a matching SVC dump profile entry, the SYSTEM=mvssys portion must be provided, where mvssys is the APPLID of an MVS system. You must also specify the job name as part of the dump title.
