Enabling fallback to software snapshots
If you enable both hardware and software snapshots,
XBM
attempts to perform a hardware snapshot. If for any reason this snapshot fails,
XBM
transparently falls back to performing a software snapshot.
To enable XBM to fall back to a software snapshot from a failed hardware snapshot, you must set up a software snapshot cache and define the options, as listed in Specifying-snapshot-types-through-options.
If the data set resides on devices that support both data-set-level and volume-level snapshots, XBM attempts to perform a data set snapshot and then a volume split before falling back to a software snapshot.
