Designating preferred and alternate logs

You can use keywords to designate a preferred log and an alternate log. The Recovery utility uses the preferred log to generate a list of input log data sets to use during the recovery process. The Recovery utility uses an alternate log (if it is available) only if an input log data set (as listed in the preferred log) is flagged in error by DBRC or if an entire set of preferred log data sets are missing.

You can control which log (PRILOG, SECLOG, PRISLD, SECSLD) is used for the preferred log and which (if any) is used for the alternate. You typically would want to control the use of preferred and alternate logs if a subset of the original logs is available at the recovery location. For example, you may keep the primary logs (PRILOG and PRISLD) at the production site and send the secondary logs (SECLOG and SECSLD) to a disaster recovery site. Therefore, at the disaster recovery site, you would designate the SECLOG and SECSLD as the preferred and alternate logs.

To designate a preferred log and an alternate log, you can use the LOGINPUT keyword, or you can use a combination of the SLOG and SLDS keywords. For batch logs, the Recovery utility always chooses the PRILOG and/or SECLOG as the preferred and alternate logs.

Important

For the purposes of discussion, this section uses the term log data set to refer to the data set that contains the records of database changes. It uses the general term log to refer to the RECON record (PRILOG, SECLOG, PRISLD, SECSLD) that identifies log data sets.
