BMC products utilities and functions
BMC offers a complete suite of products, utilities, and functions to ensure the recoverability of IMS full-function databases, including High Availability Large Databases (HALDBs), and Fast Path data entry databases (DEDBs).
The following BMC Backup and Recovery products are available:
- BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS
- IMAGE COPY PLUS (ICP)
- CHANGE ACCUMULATION PLUS (CHAMP)
- RECOVERY PLUS for IMS
- RECOVERY MANAGER for IMS
The following table summarizes information about the products.
Backup and Recovery products

---|---|---|
BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS | BRI | Image Copy utility Change Accumulation utility Recovery utility Recovery Manager functions and utilities Recovery Advisor Concurrent Pointer Checking function Index Rebuild function |
IMAGE COPY PLUS | ICP | Image Copy utility |
CHANGE ACCUMULATION PLUS | CAP | Change Accumulation utility |
RECOVERY PLUS for IMS | RVP | Recovery utility |
RECOVERY MANAGER for IMS | IRM | Recovery Manager functions and utilities |
The following topic provide more information about the utilities and functions that are included in the Backup and Recovery products for IMS.
BMC Image Copy utility
The BMC Image Copy utility is available with BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS and IMAGE COPY PLUS.
The functions of this utility produce various types of backups, including batch image copies, online (fuzzy) image copies, incremental image copies, copies of image copies, Snapshot Copies, and Instant Snapshot copies. For more information, see the IMAGE COPY PLUS documentation.
To produce Snapshot Copies and Instant Snapshot copies, the Image Copy utility works with the SNAPSHOT UPGRADE FEATURE (SUF) component, which is included with the Image Copy utility at no additional charge, to take advantage of the features of intelligent storage devices. For more information, see the SNAPSHOT UPGRADE FEATURE for IMS documentation.
BMC Change Accumulation utility
The BMC Change Accumulation utility is available with BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS and CHANGE ACCUMULATION PLUS.
This utility performs change accumulation of the IMS log records of database changes. It can also produce incremental image copies. For more information, see the CHANGE ACCUMULATION PLUS documentation.
BMC Recovery utility
The BMC Recovery utility is available with BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS and RECOVERY PLUS for IMS.
The Recovery utility performs full recoveries, roll-forward recoveries, and Point-in-Time (PIT) recoveries of IMS databases. The PIT Recovery feature is available with any version of BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS and with RECOVERY PLUS for IMS version 2.7.00 or later.
For more information, see Using.
Recovery Manager
Recovery Manager (RMGR) functions and utilities are available with BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS and RECOVERY MANAGER for IMS.
The tasks that you can perform with RMGR include the following:
- create, validate, and rebuild groups of databases
- check recovery assets
- create recovery points
- synchronize log switches
- find recovery points
- analyze logs
- create recovery JCL
- maintain information about additional recovery assets
- issue selected IMS commands with a positive response
- automatically delete and define database data sets
- clean up RECON data sets in a disaster recovery situation
For more information, see the RECOVERY MANAGER for IMS documentation.
Recovery Advisor
Recovery Advisor is available only with BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS.
Recovery Advisor automatically detects conditions that may adversely affect recoverability and helps you to take action to correct these conditions. Two implementations of Recovery Advisor are available:
- The implementation of Recovery Advisor that has a graphical user interface (GUI) builds on an architecture that also supports Database Advisor functions and features, which are available in the BMC AMI Database Advisor for IMS product. The Monitor Recovery function and the DBA Toolkit are included with Recovery Advisor in the GUI.
- The implementation of Recovery Advisor that has an ISPF interface builds on the recovery management foundation of RMGR and can be considered as an extension of RMGR functionality. For more information, see the RECOVERY MANAGER for IMS documentation.
Concurrent Pointer Checking function
The Concurrent Pointer Checking function is available with the following BMC products:
- BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS for full-function databases and DEDBs
- BMC AMI Pointer Checker for IMS for full-function databases
- Fast Path Analyzer/EP for DEDBs
The Backup and Recovery products can invoke the Concurrent Pointer Checking function to verify the validity of database pointers as part of the image copy, incremental image copy, and recovery processes. For more information, see Concurrently-verifying-pointers.
Index Rebuild function
The Recovery utility can invoke the Index Rebuild function to rebuild the primary index and all secondary indexes for a recovered DL/I database. The function rebuilds all indexes associated with a database using only the database as input rather than recovering these indexes from an image copy.
