Getting started

The BMC Recovery utility is available with the BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS product and the RECOVERY PLUS for IMS product.

It is a batch utility that functionally replaces the IBM IMS Database Recovery Utility for recovery of DL/I and DEDB databases. It recovers one or more databases with minimal involvement of the database administrator.

To reduce the amount of time the databases are unavailable to IMS users, the Recovery utility does the following:

  • Automates much of the recovery process.
  • Recovers multiple databases with one pass of the log and change accumulation data sets.
  • Recovers one or more databases to any point in time, not just to when the database is deallocated and the log has been closed.
  • Works with other BMC utilities, functions, and products to rebuild primary and secondary indexes from the primary database, check pointers concurrently with recovery processing to ensure that the recovered database is valid, and produce an image copy of the recovered database concurrently with recovery processing.

The BMC Recovery utility is a quick and effective tool for recovering the following types of data sets:

  • HDAM/OSAM
  • HIDAM/OSAM
  • HDAM/VSAM
  • HIDAM/VSAM
  • HISAM/VSAM (ESDS and KSDS)
  • SHISAM
  • index (primary and secondary)
  • index (primary and secondary) using a HISAM unload data set as input
  • DEDB
  • High Availability Large Database (HALDB)
  • partitioned database available with the IMS Partition Support product (Partition DB) Version 2
