How the Log Sync function works

The Log Sync function performs the following actions:

  • It checks to determine whether any DL/I batch jobs are executing concurrently with the online IMS systems and whether any of these jobs are updating databases. If DL/I batch update jobs are executing, you can control whether the function attempts to obtain a disaster recovery point.
  • It issues an IMS /SWI OLDS CHKPT command to the IMS system that is connected to the specified RMGR or to all IMS systems that are connected to the specified sharegroup.
  • It waits for the log to be archived so that it can obtain and report the data set names of the archived logs. You can specify a timeout value that stops the Log Synchronization function if the log archival process does not occur within the specified time interval.
  • It saves the recovery point in the RMGR repository so that you can select it for recovery with the Find Recovery Points function. This type of recovery point is reported as LOG SYNC. You can also select the last Log Sync timestamp from the Recovery Options panel or specify it as the value for the RECOVERTO keyword in the Batch Interface utility.
  • It builds a report that describes the results of function processing, including information about the logs that contain the disaster recovery point. It writes the report to the data set that is identified with the SUMMARY DD statement.
  • It writes start and end messages (with function identifier LGSYNC) to the IRMPRINT data set for the RMGR.
