Installing

The QUICKSTART for MVS (QSM) product is an intelligent checkpointing utility that provides your organization with a uniform interface for checkpointing and restarting batch applications written in a wide range of programming languages and running against a wide range of database management systems. It offers the following benefits:

  • A reduced number of database backup and restore exercises that need to be run for non-restartable batch jobs, allowing your applications to better utilize the time available within the batch window
  • Reduced resource usage through avoiding reruns to manage ABENDs
  • Reduced costs when developing and maintaining restartable application programs
  • Investment protection, if a change occurs in the selection of a DBMS, since QUICKSTART executes under any DBMS that supports the COMMIT and ROLLBACK (or equivalent) functions

If there is a DBMS or a programming language in use at your installation that is not explicitly mentioned in this manual, contact BMC Software Product Support immediately. Our technical support staff will work with you to provide any necessary DBMS or programming language interfaces. QUICKSTART was designed to be DBMS independent. Historically, it has been very easy to adapt QUICKSTART to new DBMSs and programming languages.

Note

There are a number of features in this space that are no longer supported by the QSM product. The documentation of these features is provided as a convenience for those customers running older releases of the QUICKSTART for MVS product and are intended for downward compatibility reference only. These features include the following:

  • IDEAL programming language supplement
  • NATURAL programming language supplement
  • CSP programming language supplement
  • C programming language supplement
  • EZTRIEVE programming language supplement
  • QUICKSTART IMS checkpoint replacement mode
  • QUICKSTART IMS checkpointing facility
  • DBMS specific considerations, including the following DBMS type: IMS, ADABAS, ORACLE, IDMS, and datacom
