Tuning process

The following procedure discusses how to use the Workfile and Sortwork Information report to tune the allocation values for the PCP work (WORKnn), direct sort work (SORTWKnn), and symbolic sort work (SYMBWKnn) files.

  1. Code the PLUSLIST DD statement in the job step JCL to request the Workfile and Sortwork Information report.

  2. Code the DD statements for the work files. Set the allocation values to very generous amounts to allow PCP to use the resources it needs.

    This step is necessary to get meaningful information on the report. If the work file is dynamically allocated, the information about the allocation unit is not available; in this case, the report displays asterisks in the information fields.

  3. Execute the Full Checking technique job step.
  4. Review the Workfile and Sortwork Information report to obtain the actual resource amounts that PCP used.
  5. Adjust the allocation values to the actual amount used (shown on the report). Add a reasonable amount to accommodate growth. You can use the DD statements or the PCP options to set the allocation values.
