Understanding the Image Copy utility functions
These topics provide information about the functions of the BMC Image Copy utility that is available with the
BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS
product and the IMAGE COPY PLUS (ICP) product. You can use this information to help you decide which functions are best suited for your needs.
The following functions are included with the Image Copy utility:
- Image Copy (batch)
- Online Image Copy
- Incremental Image Copy
- Copy Image Copy
- Snapshot Copy
- Instant Snapshot
ICP also provides the ICP Database Recovery function, which is primarily used if you have a compressed image copy and you do not have the BMC Recovery utility, which is available with BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS and the RECOVERY PLUS for IMS product. For more information about the ICP Recovery function, see IMAGE-COPY-PLUS-Database-Recovery-function.
Most functions of the Image Copy utility can create one to ten copies of the image copy data set. Duplicate copies are useful as additional backups to store off-site or to use in case the first copy is damaged or encounters I/O errors. If the Image Copy utility is writing multiple copies and an error occurs on one of the copies, it continues writing to the other copies as long as they remain error free. You can use the Recovery Extensions feature for automated management of additional image copies; for more information, see Recovery Extensions feature.
The Snapshot Copy function can create a copy of a database while updates are in progress. The Instant Snapshot function creates a nearly instantaneous copy, regardless of database size.
