Getting started

This section introduces the BMC Image Copy utility of the BMC AMI Backup and Recovery for IMS product and the IMAGE COPY PLUS (ICP) product.

Using the BMC Image Copy utility, you can create backups of full-function (DLI) databases, including High Availability Large Database (HALDB) partitions and indexes, and Fast Path data-entry databases (DEDBs).

The Image Copy utility performs all of the functions of the IBM IMS Image Copy utility and provides features that are not available from IBM. Faster access methods and the ability to concurrently process databases enable the utility to image copy substantially faster than the IMS Database Image Copy utility. Further, the Incremental Image Copy and Online Image Copy functions let you create an image copy without using online IMS resources or taking the database offline.

The BMC SNAPSHOT UPGRADE FEATURE for IMS component is included with the Image Copy utility to support the Snapshot Copy function and the Instant Snapshot function. The Snapshot Copy function can create a batch image copy while updates are in progress on the database, either by exploiting the technology that is available with intelligent storage devices or by using the software cache. The Instant Snapshot function creates a physical duplicate of a database in seconds by using the features of intelligent storage devices. SUF is included with the Image Copy utility at no additional charge.
