Pointer information

The pointer information section decodes the prefix portion of the segment as follows.

RBA

The RBA of the segment. This value is shown only for ESDS or OSAM data sets. Type over the value in this field to traverse to a particular RBA in the database.

(SC-DB)

The segment code and delete byte values. You can modify them if you have the proper security access.

(CTR)

The counter field value. This field is present for logical parent segments that do not have logical child pointers defined. The counter field contains the count of the logical child segments that point to this logical parent segment. If the count is greater than zero, the logical parent segment cannot be deleted from the database because logical child segments still point to it. You can modify this field if you have the proper security access.

(pointers)

All segment prefix pointers that are defined for the DBD. The Database Zap utility displays the type of pointer (PTF, PCF, PTB, and so on); the contents of the pointer (which is also the RBA of the segment the pointer is pointing to), and the name of the segment the pointer is pointing to. If the pointer points to another data set and/or database, the Database Zap utility displays the DBD name and data set number of the segment the pointer is pointing to.

When the panel is in edit mode, you can modify the hexadecimal pointer fields directly on the panel. Use the EDIT command to get into edit mode from browse mode.

If the pointer is hierarchical, the target segment name of the pointer might be shown as a question mark (?).

selection field

You can use the selection field to the left of the pointer type to select the pointer. The following codes are valid:

  • V

Verify the value of the RBA.

  • c

Select the pointer and traverse to it (c can be any character except V).

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
