Data situations for mapping control blocks

Mapping control blocks is useful in many data management situations, such as the following:

  • Understanding the control block

The visual display of the segment structure helps you immediately identify the position of a segment within the database hierarchy and its relationships with other segments. Related Database Integrity functions are accessible from the control block map, so mapping is often a good starting point for database analysis.

  • Generating the source code for a new PSB

When you view the DBD Map report interactively, you can press a function key to tell Database Integrity to generate statements that describe the displayed structure. You can later edit these statements and use them as input to the PSBGEN utility.

  • Educating others about control block structure

A visual display of the structure of a control block is an effective way to explain the design of the database or a program’s view of the database.
