Using the DBD Schema Editor


To view and make changes to the DBDs from the graphical user interface using the DBD Schema Editor option from the Apps menu, complete the following steps.

The source statements to implement the changes you make are shown in either DDL or control statement format with the ability to toggle between these formats. 

  1. From the main screen, click Apps.
  2. From the Diagnose/Explore box, click DBD Schema Editor.
  3. The DBD Schema Editor is displayed as shown below.dbd schema editor 1.png
  4. Select a RECON data set from the list and select an associated IMS ID.
  5. Based on the selection, the DBDLIB list is populated. Select a DBD LIB from this list.
  6. Select a DBD from the list or search for a DBD, and click Load Tree. The DBD Schema Editor displays the DBD Schema as a tree structure in the right-hand side pane as shown below.DBD editor to Load DBD.PNG
  7. Select a segment from the schema tree. The window displays DBD details for the selected segment as follows.edit dbd details on dbd editor.png
  8. Optionally, click Edit Detail to modify the DBD details for the selected segment such as Length, Position, Fill Type, and Data Type.
  9. Optionally, click New Field to add a new field to the DBD details.
  10. You can also modify the following segment properties:
    1. General Properties—segment name and the name of its parent. You cannot modify these properties.
    2. Length Properties—variable or fixed length, maximum length, key length, and concatenated key length
    3. Compression Properties—whether compression is enabled or not
    4. Key Properties—whether the key field is present, and whether the key is unique
    5. Logical Relationship—whether the segment is paired with another segment, and also if it is a logical child or a logical parent of another segment
    6. Virtual Properties—whether the segment is virtual or not
    7. Count Properties—number of children that the segment has, number of fields that the segment has, and frequency
    8. Dataset Properties—dataset group ID
  11. Additionally, you can modify the following database properties:
    1. Database randomizer name
    2. Root addressable area size
    3. Number of RAPs
    4. Data set group to select and move the data set to another group
  12. Optionally, click Add Segment to add a new segment. 
    1. Type a name for the segment.
    2. Select a parent segment for this new segment from the drop-down list.
    3. Click Add.
    4. A message stating that the add operation is successful is displayed.
  13. Click Import/Export and select one of the following options:
    1. Import Schema—select an earlier saved schema XML to load the schema and display it in the DBD schema editor.
    2. Export Schema—save the schema as an XML file to your local computer.
  14. Click View New Source and select one of the following options:
    1. GEN—select this option to view the generated JCL.
    2. DDL—select this option to view the data definition.
  15. Click Analyze Changes to see an analysis of the difference in the original and updated HDD copy and the actions that have caused this difference. 
  16. If the reason and the result tally, click Save to commit the changes to the database.

 

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
