Volume serial

Required for ARCCHKP, ARCHIST, and ARCMRMCF if the data set does not use SMS; optional for ARCCHKP, ARCHIST, and ARCMRMCF if the data set uses SMS; optional for ARCDLTRC and ARVDBLOG.

Use this field to indicate the volume serial identifier (VOLSER) to use for the data set. (IDCAMS, which is used to allocate ARCCHKP, ARCHIST, and ARCMRMCF, requires the VOLSER if the data set does not use SMS.)

Warning

You can specify a generic or esoteric volume name; however, for ARCCHKP the system must resolve the name to the same type of device at restart as was used in the original execution.

For an SMS data set, the VOLSER is not recommended but is permitted for a specific volume assignment.

Note

BMC Software recommends that you place the checkpoint data sets on a different volume from the REGISET, the IMS RECON data sets (if applicable), and the Db2 catalog (if applicable). If these data sets are on different volumes, the environment is less susceptible to volume contention problems and the effects of hardware failures are less severe.
