Determining whether to have BMC Application Director for IMS terminate connections to ESSs2

When IMS BMP, DLI, or DBB batch job are waiting on calls from IMS ESSs, you can have BMC Application Director for IMS terminate the connections to the IMS ESSs so that the jobs can be suspended and resumed.

Application Director uses the STOP REGION ABDUMP and STOP REGION CANCEL commands to terminate the connections. Application Director does not issue the command if the jobs are waiting for a response from IMS.

Application Director automatically repositions the IMS databasewhen it resumes the job, but the jobs must re-establish their connection with the IMS ESSs.

Warning

When Application Director terminates an IMS BMP, DLI, or DBB batch job's connection to the IMS ESS so that it can be suspended and resumed, the job must be able to re-establish a connection to the IMS ESS after it has been suspended and resumed. If the IMS BMP, DLI, or DBB batch job cannot re-establish the connection with the IMS ESS, there is a potential integrity exposure for the application program. The steps required to re-establish the connection to the IMS ESS will vary widely depending on the application program and the IMS ESS that it connects with.

For example, if an IMS BMP is accessing DB2 cursor sets when Application Director terminates the connection, the DB2 cursor sets can be deleted. The IMS BMP must be prepared to rebuild these cursor sets and reposition itself with DB2. If an IMS BMP is not coded to detect when a cursor set is lost and the cursor sets are not rebuilt, the result can be incorrect output for the application program. DB2 is only one example of the many IMS ESSs. Rebuilding cursor sets is only one example of many tasks that can be required to re-establish a connection.

Before you specify that you want Application Director to terminate connections for IMS BMP, DLI, and DBB batch jobs to IMS ESSs so that they can be suspended and resumed, you should coordinate a review with your Application Programmers, DBAs, and System Programmers to:

Evaluate the consequences of the STOP REGION CANCEL command that Application Director issues on the ESSs at your site

Verify that all of the IMS BMP, DLI, and DBB batch jobs that will have their connections terminated are capable of accurately re-establishing their connections with the IMS ESSs after they are resumed.
