Overview and guidelines for GDGs

You can specify a GDG for these types of data sets.

  • IMS log files
  • Image copy data sets

When you specify a GDG, the products:

  • Use the pattern data set name to identify and allocate the appropriate data sets
  • Automatically add the (+1) to the pattern data set name

If you want to use generation data sets, do not specify a (+1) at the end of the pattern data set name. The products determine the generation number for you.

Warning

Note

For BMC Database Director for IMS and BMC HALO for IMS, any subsequent steps in the same job must use GDG.NAME(+0) instead of GDG.NAME(+1).

For example, if the job creates an image copy and the step for the image copy is followed by a step to restore to a data set, you must specify GDG.NAME(+0) in the step for the restore.

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
