Setting the manual restart mode

When you enter action code O on the List Records panel to set manual restart information, AR/CTL displays the Set Manual Restart Information panel.

Override checkpoint ID  . . . . . __________
Override IMSLOGR DSName . . . . . ____________________________________________

For IMS programs, you may be able to use this panel to provide an override checkpoint (a checkpoint other than one of the two stored in the restart data set) or to cold-start the job step. You may also provide the data set name of the IMS log data set that contains the override checkpoint. Several limitations apply to the use of this panel:

  • The application program must use the IMS Extended Checkpoint/Restart facility.
  • The program must use the value N for the Replace IMS GSAM with ASAM processing option.
  • The checkpoint records must be written to an IMS log data set (the program must use the value Y for the Write Checkpoints to IMS Log processing option).
  • The program cannot use the AUTO$ASB method of obtaining data services.
  • AR/CTL for VSAM cannot be licensed in the environment.
Warning

Make sure that you provide correct information on this panel. AR/CTL does not validate the information; if the information is incorrect, the job step may be restarted incorrectly.

In the Overridden by user field, the panel displays the TSO user ID of the person who last set the override checkpoint. If an override checkpoint has not been defined already, this field is set to your user ID automatically when you set an override checkpoint.

You can enter values in the following fields:

Override checkpoint ID

Enter the checkpoint ID of the override checkpoint that will be used for restart. You can specify any valid checkpoint ID, including the special checkpoint IDs NOMSGS, NOMSG540, NOMSG542, NOMSG681, and NO681542. If the Allow Cold Start Override option is set to Y, you can specify a special checkpoint ID of COLD, COLDMSGS, COLDMSG540, COLDMSG542, COLDMSG681, or COLD681542 to cold-start the job step.

If you specify a checkpoint ID other than one of the special checkpoint IDs, the Override IMSLOGR DSName field cannot be blank and the previous execution must have had the Log Checkpoint Records to IMS option set to Y. If this option was set to N, the IMS log data set created during the previous execution does not contain the checkpoint records required for restart.

Override IMSLOGR DSName

If the job step is a batch job step, this field contains the data set name of the IMS log data set from the previous execution. If the job is a BMP and has not been updated on this panel, this field contains blanks.

Provide the name of the cataloged IMS log data set that contains the override checkpoint. If you provide this name, AR/CTL dynamically allocates the IMS log at restart. You can omit this information if you provide the IMSLOGR DD statement in the job step JCL or if you use a COLD -type checkpoint ID.
