Non-unique job step
AR/CTL normally uses a combination of qualifiers, such as the job name, step name, program name, and PSB or ASB name to identify a unique job step. AR/CTL must perform special processing for a job step if the normal combination of qualifiers does not represent a unique job step.
Use the Non-Unique Job Step option to indicate that the job step is not unique. Non-unique job steps require manual intervention at restart; for more information, see Using.
During normal start of a job step that has been identified as non-unique, AR/CTL writes preliminary verification information to the restart header in the restart data set. This information (which can include the PSB or ASB name, the job number, the previous job name, and restart data set validation information) is necessary to connect the restart data set with a specific execution.
For a non-unique job step, the presence of the restart data set (provided with the ARCXRST DD statement) in the job step JCL controls whether AR/CTL performs a restart instead of a cold start. AR/CTL uses the header information in the restart data set to validate that the restart data set was created by the job step being restarted.
