Recovery simulation and estimation

Simulation and estimation are valuable tools for preparing and fine-tuning your disaster and local-site recovery plans. This section discusses how you can use the Recovery Management for Db2 solution to assist in recovery simulation and to estimate the amount of time that will be required to perform a recovery.

You might find recovery simulation useful in reducing your disaster recovery and local site testing costs. Estimation is useful for determining problem spaces and trying different scenarios. You can collect data for simulated, estimated, and actual recoveries.

The recovery simulation feature performs all aspects of recovery up to, but not including, any destructive operations on the data. It reads image copies and sorts and applies all log records required for recovery, discarding the output after verifying that the recovery resources are valid. You can use the simulation for both disaster recovery and local object set recovery. The simulation also gives you a close approximation of how long an actual recovery will take. For more information, see Recovery-simulation.

checks for the solution password before performing the simulated recovery.

The recovery estimation feature can provide an estimate in hours, minutes, and seconds for the amount of time required to perform a complete disaster recovery, including application resources. It produces a list of the ten objects that would take the longest amount of time to recover. Estimation is faster than simulation because it does not perform any recovery steps. For more information, see Recovery-estimation.

Data about the recovery operation is collected for all simulated, estimated, and actual recoveries and saved into BMC AMI Recovery Manager tables for comparison purposes. The ability to analyze and compare recovery statistics enables you to evaluate and improve your disaster recovery processes over time. For more information, see Disaster-recovery-data-collection.
