SMF extract and table update (DPRSMFA and DPRSMF)

This section describes the process of extracting SMF data and loading the extracted data into the detail performance data tables.

You can use one of the following job streams to complete the process:

Job stream

Description

DPRSMFA (PTF BPD4939 applied)

(Recommended method)

Extracts SMF data and submits jobs to load the extracted data to the tables by type (statistics, accounting, audit, and storage). You can submit the jobs in parallel or sequentially.

For more information, see DPRSMFA-job-control-statements-PTF-BPD4939-applied.

DPRSMF

Extracts SMF data and sequentially loads the extracted data to the tables by type (statistics, accounting, audit, and storage)

For more information, see DPRSMF-job-control-statements.

The SMF data set and control statements describing the DB2 tables to be loaded are the input to this procedure. The output of this process is the extracted data added to the detail performance data tables and, optionally, extract files.

You can use the following methods to load the DB2 tables:

  • The IBM LOAD method, which uses the IBM DSNUTILB utility
  • The NGT Load method, which uses the BMC Next Generation Technology Load for DB2 for z/OS (NGT Load) product
  • The LOADPLUS method, which uses the LOADPLUS for Db2 product

Notes

Consider the following information:

  • Next Generation Technology Load for Db2 for z/OS (NGT Load) is the preferred BMC table load utility.
  • DPRSMFA does not support LOADPLUS for Db2.
  • Future releases of MainView for DB2 will not support LOADPLUS for Db2.

As part of the MVDB2/DC archive data set creation process, sample JCL members are provided to execute the DPRSMF or DPRSMFA job stream. These members are provided in BBSAMP as DPRARC (IBM LOAD method), DPRARCLP (LOADPLUS method), and DPRARCNL (NGT Load method). For more information, see Customizing-after-installation.
