Deploying

After completing your product order successfully, you can deploy the downloaded portable software instance (PSI) via the IBM z/OSMF environment.

The deployment process copies a PSI to a new target SI. For your PSI deployments, you use the Deployment Checklist page in the Software Management task in IBM z/OSMF. The Deployment Checklist table lists all the steps that are required in the software deployment process.

To deploy a PSI, complete all the steps in the checklist.

Before you begin

Make sure that:

  • Your product order is completed. For more information, see Ordering.
  • You have the Server XML, which is made available after your product order is completed. The Server XML contains information about the download server and the location of the PSI files on that server.
  • You meet the required IBM z/OSMF requirements. For more information, see FAQs-IBM-z-OSMF-and-other-requirements.

To start a new deployment

  1. Log in to the z/OSMF desktop environment with your valid Mainframe ID and password.
  2. In the z/OSMF desktop area, double-click Software Management image-2023-10-20_13-34-59.png.
  1. On the Software Management page, select Deployments.
  1. In the Deployments table, click Actions > New.
    The Deployment Checklist is displayed.
  2. Complete all the steps in the checklist described in the IBM documentation. For more information about these steps, see Deployment Checklist

    Important

    • You can deploy only one PSI at a time. For multiple PSIs, you must complete the deployment checklist for each PSI that you want to deploy.
    • For more information about the steps in the Deployment Checklist, see the IBM documentation.

Deployment Checklist

Important

The Deployment Checklist is derived from IBM z/OSMF.

Use this option if your PSI files are already on z/OS. For more details, see IBM documentation.

    • From Local Workstation

      1. Make sure that you have downloaded your product PSIs on your local workstation. For more information, see Ordering.
      2. On the Add Portable Software Instance page, click Browse on the Local files selected field. Browse to the previously verified and unzipped folder containing PSI. Select all of the files except the Server XML. After you have selected the files to be uploaded, the File Location field is enabled.
      3. In the File Location field, specify the name of a UNIX directory that contains the PSI files and click Upload.
      4. Complete the following three new fields and click OK.

        Field

        Description

        Name

Specify the name of the new PSI that you are adding. You can modify the existing name or enter a new name.

        Description

Specify the description for the new PSI that you are adding. You can modify the existing description or enter a new description. This field is optional.

        Categories

Select one or more categories to assign to the PSI.

The PSI is listed in the Portable Software Instances table.

    • (Recommended) From Download Server

      1. On the Add Portable Software Instance From Download Server (Step 1 of 4) page, complete the following fields and click Next.

        Field

        Description

        Name

Enter a name for the new PSI that you want to add.

        Categories

(Optional) Select one or more categories to assign to the PSI. BMC recommends creating a new category to group the PSIs for your installation. This helps in finding the related PSIs.

        Server XML

(Recommended) Copy and paste the content from the Server XML provided by BMC. The Server XML contains information about the download server and the location of the PSI files on that server.

        System

Select the name of the system on which you want to download the PSI file.

        UNIX directory

Enter the name of the UNIX directory where you want to download the PSI.

      2. On the Add Portable Software Instance From Download Server (Step 2 of 4) page, complete the following fields and click Next.

        Field

        Description

        Client XML

(Required) Update the downloadmethod parameter value to https.

        JCL data set name

Enter the name of the partitioned data set where z/OSMF stores the jobs.

        JOB statement

Enter the JOB statement to be used for the download job.

      3. On the Add Portable Software Instance From Download Server (Step 3 of 4) page, review and submit the jobs in sequential order. To submit a job, select the job, and click Actions > Submit Job. After all the jobs are completed, click Next.

        Important

Make sure that you click Refresh to view the status of the job in z/OSMF. The Status column displays the status of the job. If the Status column is blank, the job is not yet submitted.

      4. On the Add Portable Software Instance From a Download Server (Step 4 of 4) page, review the displayed field description and complete the download by clicking Finish.

Select the objective for this deployment.

Use this step to specify where to install your portable software instance, as follows.

  1. Specify that you want to create a new software instance and a new global zone CSI.
  2. Select the target system (LPAR) where your target software instance should reside.
  3. In the Catalogs section, select No to specify that you are not deploying z/OS.

Check for missing SYSMODs.

Important

This step is not applicable if you are installing BMC AMI Datastream products.

On the Check for missing SYSMODs page, clear the following options:

  • On the Data Sets page, update the target data set HLQ as per the requirement that you want to use for your deployment. Also, specify a volume or storage class to identify where to create the target data sets.
  • On the Catalogs page, keep the default catalog assignments.
  • On the Volumes and Storage Classes page, keep the default volume and storage classes.
  • On the Mount Points page, specify a new target mount point for the selected mount points.

Define the job settings. z/OSMF creates the deployment summary and jobs.

  • View the deployment summary.

Use this step to update the job settings as required and to view the deployment summary.
