Introduction to the BMC License Usage Collection Utility

The BMC License Usage Collection Utility is a free application that enables you to run license compliance reports on the BMC products your organization owns. This information can help you determine whether you're under-utilizing or over-utilizing licenses. Although you can run license reports from individual BMC products, the license utility enables you to run reports all at once across many BMC products (See Supported-BMC-products).  The license utility provides specific license report information for each BMC product, so the report contents and formatting vary (see Reports overview for details on each product's report).

Configuration is quick and easy. You configure the license utility only once for each BMC product by connecting to the servers that host the BMC products. (See Configuring-product-servers.) When you're ready to run the reports, the license utility automatically connects to the server and produces a report, like the following CSV example. (See Running-reports.) Each time reports are run, they are stored in the user\Reports folder where the License Utility is installed ($LicenseUsageCollectorHome\licenseusagecollector\user\Reports\timestamp folder).

You can schedule the license reports to run automatically on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, or on a customized schedule. (See Scheduling-reports.) You can also configure the license utility to automatically email scheduled reports to a specified email address (See Enabling-email-notification-of-reports-with-SMTP.)

After you review the reports and email them to the BMC License Compliance team, you can also talk to your BMC sales representative about managing your under-utilized or over-utilized licenses.

Downloading the license utility

You can download the free license utility either from the BMC Communities page or from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) site (see Performing-the-installation).
