Creating Drill Through reports



With Drill Through reports, you can click a hyperlink to another report and get a deeper insight into your data. You can create Drill Through reports by creating parent-child relationships between the reports that you want to link.

You can link reports by using filters in the child reports.

To create Drill Through reports

Do the following:

  1. While creating a report, set the filter value to User Prompt. Do the following to set the filter value:
    1. Launch TrueSight Smart Reporting from the TrueSight console.
    2. Click tsr_create_report.png and click Report.
    3. Select one of the following views:
      • To create an Event and Performance report, select the Device Metrics & Events view.
      • To create an Event and Impact report, select the CI Impact & Events view.
    4. In the view pane, drag and drop a field to the Columns field.
    5. Drag and drop a field to the Filters area. Ensure that you have dropped this field in the Columns field also.
    6. Click the arrow_icon.png icon in the field that you dropped in the Filters area.
    7. Hover over Value, and then select User Prompt.

  2. Create parent-child relationships between the reports that you want to link. Do the following to create parent-child relationships:
    1. Ensure the following:
      • The reports that you want to link exist in TrueSight Smart Reporting. See Creating-reports for instructions.
      • You have set the filter values of the reports to User Prompt.
    2. In TrueSight Smart Reporting, open the report that you want to use as the parent.
    3. Click Edit, and then click Data.
    4. On the message, click Ok.
    5. In the Analysis style area, click Drill Through. The Related Content tab appears.

    6. Click the Related Content tab.
    7. In the Drill Through area, drag and drop the report that you want to use as the child report.

    8. In the Join Type area, click Drill Through.

    9. In the Joins area, in Master Field, select the filter that will be a hyperlink to open the child report.
      Under Child Filter, you can see the filter that you created in the child report.
    10. In Hyperlink field, select the field in the parent report that will be a hyperlink to open the child report. 
    11. If you want to open the child report in a new window, click the Popup New Window option, and click Update.
    12. Publish the report. in the published report, you can see the hyperlink on the field that you selected.

    13. Click the hyperlink. You can see the child report that you joined with the parent report.

Example scenario

In the Device Metrics & Events view, the following reports exist:

  • A device report that shows weekly data
  • A device report that shows daily data
  • A device report that shows hourly data

From the weekly report, you want to use the Week field to drill down to view the daily data for a specific week. From the daily report, you want to use the Day field to drill down to view the data for a specific hour on a day. For this, you must create the following parent-child relationship:

Do the following to create the Drill Through reports as required:

  1. To obtain the correct parent-child relationship, create the following filters:
    • Because the hourly report is a child of the daily report, in the hourly report, set the filter on the Hour field.
    • Because the daily report is a child of the weekly report, in the daily report, set the filter on the Day field.
  2. Open the weekly report.
  3. Follow the instructions to create a link to the daily report on the Day field, and click Save.
    1. Click Edit, and then click Data.
    2. On the message, click Ok.
    3. In the Analysis style area, click Drill Through. The Related Content tab appears.
    4. Click the Related Content tab.
    5. In the Drill Through area, drag and drop the daily report.
    6. In the Join Type area, click Drill Through.
    7. In the Joins area, in Master Field, select the Day filter.
      Under Child Filter, you can see the filter that you created in the child report to which you are linking the report.
    8. In Hyperlink field, select the Week field in the parent report that will be a hyperlink to open the daily report. 
    9. If you want to open the child report in a new window, click the Popup New Window option, and click Update.
    10. Publish the report. In the published report, you can see the hyperlink on the field that you selected.
  4. Open the daily report.
  5. Follow the instructions to create a link to the hourly report on the Hour field, and click Save.
    1. Click Edit, and then click Data.
    2. On the message, click Ok.
    3. In the Analysis style area, click Drill Through. The Related Content tab appears.
    4. Click the Related Content tab.
    5. In the Drill Through area, drag and drop the daily report.
    6. In the Join Type area, click Drill Through.
    7. In the Joins area, in Master Field, select the Hour filter.
      Under Child Filter, you can see the filter that you created in the child report to which you are linking the report.
    8. In Hyperlink field, select the Day field in the parent report that will be a hyperlink to open the hourly report. 
    9. If you want to open the child report in a new window, click the Popup New Window option, and click Update.
    10. Publish the report. In the published report, you can see the hyperlink on the field that you selected.
