Upgrading BMC Reporting Foundation from version 3.2.x to version 4.1.00

Upgrading to BMC Reporting Foundation 4.1 from version 3.2.x, involves installing a new deployment and copying your content and system data from existing deployment of previous version.

You can install the new deployment (BMC Reporting Foundation 4.1) on a different host or same host (existing deployment of previous version - 3.2.x) provided it is a 64-bit operating system and all the System-requirements-and-product-compatibility  are met.

When installing on an existing 3.2.x deployment, you must install BMC Reporting Foundation 4.1 in a separate directory and specify a unique Central Management Server port, and ensure that all other ports used by both deployments are unique.

When you no longer need the old deployment, you can uninstall it.

The Upgrade Management Tool is used for exporting contents (user accounts, groups, reports, universes, security, and other objects), and upgrading it to the most recent version. This tool provides the option of Complete Upgrade and Incremental Upgrade. While performing an Incremental Upgrade, you can select the objects which you want to upgrade from the source, whereas in a Complete Upgrade the entire source is exported. Source and Destination of upgrade can be a live Configuration Management Server or a BIAR (Business Intelligence Archive Resource) file.

You must have the Client Tools for BusinessObjects installed on a Windows computer.

Refer to the following procedure to upgrade BMC Reporting Foundation.

Note

You must have version 3.2.x of BMC Reporting Foundation installed before you can upgrade to version 4.1.00. For upgrades on a Solaris computer, you must use the BusinessObjects Client Tools on a Windows computer.

If you are using only BMC provided universe and reports, upgrade is not required. You are only required to export the LCM BIAR file.

For example, BMC ProactiveNet Performance Manager Reporting provides LCM BIAR, which consists of universe and out of the box reports. Use the Upgrade Management Tool only if you want to copy and upgrade customized universe or reports from previous version of BMC Reporting Foundation.

Upgrade scenarios:

  1. Live to Live - Exports content from a source deployment to a destination deployment, and upgrades it.
  2. BIAR to Live - Exports content from a BIAR file to a destination deployment. You can use the upgrade management tool to import a BIAR file generated using the Import Wizard from BRF 3.2.x.
  3. Live to BIAR - Exports content from a source deployment (4.1 or later) to a BIAR file.

    Note

You cannot export a BIAR file generated using the 4.x upgrade management tool into another 4.x deployment. Use Promotion Management in CMC to promote content between two 4.x deployments.

To upgrade BMC Reporting Foundation from version 3.2.x to version 4.1.00, using Upgrade Management Tool

  1. Start the upgrade management tool from SAP. From the Start Menu > SAP Business Intelligence > SAP BusinessObjects BI platform 4 > Upgrade Management Tool.
  2. Select Complete Upgrade if you want to export all content from a source deployment to a destination deployment. Select Incremental Upgrade if you want to export selected contents or objects.

    Note

Complete Upgrade is the simplest and fastest way to upgrade all contents from a previous version. BMC recommends Complete Upgrade. For details regarding Incremental Upgrades refer to the Business Intelligence Platform Upgrade Guide for SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform 4.1 SP 3 Patch 3.

  3. On the Log On page select Upgrade Scenario from Upgrade Scenario list items. Provide source and destination information specific to the selected Upgrade Scenario.
For BIAR file provide the path and file name of the BIAR file for the previous version or browse to the folder where you have copied the BIAR file. For CMS, provide the hostname, username, and password.

    Note

If the CMS runs on any port except 6400, enter the hostname followed by a colon and the port number (For example, hostname:portnumber ) The Live to BIAR option is used only to create BIAR file from source deployment for version 4.0 or later.

To upgrade contents from BIAR file of previous version, use the BIAR to Live option. To upgrade from a live CMS deployment of previous version use Live to Live option.

  4. For Complete Upgrade, review the list and click Next. For Incremental Upgrades, the Object Selection page shows object type to select. Select the required Object Type and click Next.
  5. On the summary page, review the contents, and click Start.
  6. After the upgrade is complete, click OK and Close.
