Key concepts

BMC Reporting Foundation provides the base on which BMC reporting systems and solutions are built. BMC Reporting Foundation is a bundle of binaries of SAP® BusinessObjects™ Enterprise, a third-party business intelligence system. BMC Reporting Foundation does not include the database that contains the data used in the reports. 

SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise provides infrastructure for reporting, including portal, scheduler, and administration facilities. It's Central Management Server (CMS) is responsible for maintaining a database of information about your BusinessObjects Enterprise system. The data stored by the CMS includes information about users and groups, security levels, BusinessObjects Enterprise content, and servers. The CMS also maintains the BusinessObjects Enterprise Repository and information about user actions.  

BMC Reporting Foundation consists of the following sets of components: 

  • Reporting server components, including the Reporting server and report portal. You can install the Reporting server components on either a Windows or a Solaris computer.
  • BMC Reporting Foundation database component. You can install the default embedded database while installing BMC Reporting Foundation or install a supported database for which you have obtained a license prior to the installation.
  • The BMC Reporting Foundation Client Tools components, which you must install on a Windows computer.

BMC Reporting Foundation is included on the BMC Software Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) page for the BMC Reporting product. If you do not already have SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise installed in your environment, use the version provided by BMC to install it. If you already have it installed in your environment, you must have adequate licensing for both your SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise environment and BMC Reporting content.
