Clustered configurations
You can install a clustered configuration of BMC Dashboards for BSM using the options discussed in this topic. Either of the options discussed in this section can be used for large deployments with large numbers of concurrent users and large volumes of data.
For more information about load balancing and high availability, see Load balancing and high availability.
Clustered BMC Atrium DIL and standalone BMC Dashboards for BSM
In this configuration, BMC Atrium DIL and BMC Dashboards for BSM application server are on separate computers, and the BMC Atrium DIL server is clustered. The clustering technology used by BMC Atrium DIL (Composite Active Cluster) allows all metadata requests and changes to be automatically propagated across all nodes in the cluster.
A clustered BMC Atrium DIL requires that you install the component using an external database.
Keep in mind the following requirements for this configuration:
- The BMC Atrium DIL servers must be homogenous; that is, they must be all UNIX, all Windows, or all Linux.
- Some load balancers may require that the load balancer and the BMC Atrium DIL servers be installed in the same subnet.
- Some load balancers might require that you install the BMC Dashboards for BSM application server on a separate subnet from the load balancer and the BMC Atrium DIL servers.
Become familiar with the requirements of the load balancer before performing the installation.

Clustered BMC Atrium DIL and clustered BMC Dashboards for BSM
In this configuration, both the BMC Atrium DIL and BMC Dashboards for BSM application server are clustered. The clustering technology used by BMC Atrium DIL (Composite Active Cluster) allows all metadata requests and changes to be automatically propagated across all nodes in the cluster.
The clustered BMC Dashboards for BSM application server allows the workload to be distributed across multiple Apache tomcat servers, so that multiple requests from several concurrent users are processed simultaneously.
This clustered configuration requires that you install BMC Atrium DIL using an external data caching database. The BMC Dashboards for BSM application server uses the same external database that the BMC Atrium DIL uses.
Keep in mind the following requirements for this configuration:
- The BMC Atrium DIL servers and the application servers require a separate load balancer, and the load balancers must be installed on separate subnets.
- The BMC Atrium DIL servers must be homogenous; that is, they must be all UNIX, all Windows, or all Linux.
- Some load balancers may require that the load balancer and the BMC Atrium DIL servers be installed in the same subnet.
- Some hardware load balancers may require that you install the BMC Dashboards for BSM application server on a separate subnet from the load balancer and the BMC Atrium DIL servers.
Become familiar with the requirements of the load balancer before performing the installation.
