Performing the installation
This section contains procedures for installing BMC Dashboards for Business Service Management (BSM) in a standalone configuration and a clustered configuration. The installation process is essentially the same for Windows, UNIX, or Linux. Any variations are described in the procedures.
Before you begin
Consider the following points before you begin the installation process
- If your ultimate plan is to install the product in a clustered configuration in your environment, BMC suggests that you install the BMC Atrium Data Integration Layer (DIL) and BMC Dashboards for BSM application server components on separate computers. For example, if you install the product in a test environment before moving it to a production environment, using two separate computers will minimize the amount of manual configuration to later reconfigure the product to a clustered configuration.
- If you plan to use BMC Remedy AR System as a data source, BMC recommends that you install the BMC Dashboards for BSM application server on a computer separate from the BMC Remedy Mid Tier component. If you choose to install the BMC Dashboards for BSM application server on the same computer as the BMC Remedy Mid Tier component, while they can share the same web container (Tomcat), if you use BMC Atrium Single Sign-On authentication, BMC Atrium Single Sign-On should have its own web container.
- If you plan to use BMC Remedy AR System as a data source, BMC recommends that you install the BMC Dashboards for BSM application server and BMC Atrium DIL on a computer separate from the BMC Remedy AR System server so that adequate resources are available to both applications.
- For Windows, ensure that you have rights for the administrator group and are logged on as an administrator before running the installation program.
- Ensure that the computer meets the minimum installation requirements as described in the compatibility matrix.
- Complete the installation worksheet to make sure that you have all the required information for the installation.
- If you are installing on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 computer with Service Pack 1, ensure that you have configured the data execution prevention (DEP) feature to recognize the installation program. For more information, see Configuring-DEP-on-computers-with-Windows-Server-2003-SP1-and-later.
- If you are reinstalling BMC Dashboards for BSM after a failed installation attempt, you must delete the entire directory where BMC Dashboards for BSM was installed (for example, C:\Program Files\BMC Software\BSMDashboards).
- If you are installing BMC Dashboards for BSM on Microsoft Windows 2008 (64-bit). make sure that the Application Experience service must be running.
- When you install BMC Dashboards for BSM, do not include a $ symbol in the installation user name. For example, do not use: VM$HT.
- If you are installing the BMC Dashboards for BSM application server component:
- If you select the LDAP authentication method, ensure that the user that you want to be the default BMC Dashboards for BSM administrator has been created and is valid in the LDAP server. Also, the user must have the following attibutes in its AD account: sn, given Name, mail.
- If you select the BMC Atrium Single Sign-On (BMC Atrium SSO) authentication method, ensure that the BMC Atrium SSO server has been installed and configured and that the user that you want to be the default BMC Dashboards for BSM administrator has been created and is valid in the LDAP server. The user that is designated to be the BMC Dashboards for BSM default administrator must be a member of the BmcSearchAdmins group in BMC Atrium SSO. For more information about installing and configuring the BMC Atrium SSO server, see the BMC Atrium Single Sign-On online documentation portal.
- If you are installing the BMC Atrium DIL component in a clustered configuration:
- You must have created a database for the external BMC Atrium DIL server before you begin the installation. For more information, see Creating-the-database-for-BMC-Atrium-DIL-and-BMC-Dashboards-for-BSM-application-server.
- The server that you have selected for the installation must be configured to have only one IP address.
