Moving from BMC Decision Support for Server Automation

If you are using BMC Decision Support for Server Automation 8.9.x, you can move to the latest version of TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation. This topic describes the considerations to plan this move.

To know the differences between BMC Decision Support for Server Automation and TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation, see Orientation-for-BMC-Decision-Support-for-Server-Automation-users.

TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation includes the following components: TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse and TrueSight Smart Reporting - Platform

Scenarios for moving to TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation

Depending on whether you want to use BMC Decision Support for Server Automation with TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation, the following scenarios are supported:

Scenario

Details

You want to run BMC Decision Support for Server Automation along with TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation for recreating custom BMC Decision Support for Server Automation reports in TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation.

You want to remove BMC Decision Support for Server Automation and reuse the BMC Decision Support for Server Automation server for TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse, and configure it to use the existing BMC Decision Support for Server Automation database.

In any of these scenarios, you can install TrueSight Smart Reporting - Platform on the TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse server or its own server.

Unsupported scenario

Do not use BMC Decision Support for Server Automation and TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation (with new Master, Work, Warehouse databases) on separate servers where both the applications use the sameTrueSight Server Automation database.

Running the ETL from both BMC Decision Support for Server Automation and TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse against the same TrueSight Server Automation database results in data loss.

Using TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation with BMC Decision Support for Server Automation

In this scenario, you install TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse on a server other than the server where BMC Decision Support for Server Automation is installed. This scenario is preferred when you have a library of custom reports created in BMC Decision Support for Server Automation. You can access and use these reports as a reference while creating new reports in TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse.

Before you begin

Do the following before moving to TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation:

  • Back up the Master, Work, Warehouse databases.
  • Back up the bds.properties file from the following path:
    <bdssa_installation_dir>/shared/ConfigurationManagement
  • Stop ETL on BMC Decision Support for Server Automation. Ensure that you move the run_etl.nsh file from $BDS_HOME/shared/odi/bin to the $BDS_HOME/shared/odi directory.
  • Ensure that there are no schedules for archival or ETL jobs in TrueSight Server Automation.

Do the following:

  1. If you are using BMC Decision Support for Server Automation 8.7 or 8.8, upgrade BMC Server Automation to TrueSight Server Automation 8.9.04 or later. For the upgrade instructions, see Upgrading to TrueSight Server Automation.

  2. Log in to the system where you want to install TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse.
  3. Install TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse. For the installation instructions, see Installing TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse.
