Creating a Component Discover Job for FIM compliance


The Discover Job finds the objects to track for changes. Specifically, the Discover Job:

  • Surveys the servers in your PCI-FIM server smart group
  • Selects the servers that match the discover conditions in the component template
  • On the selected servers, selects the objects that match the parts specifications in the component template.

The following sections describe how to create a Component Discover Job for FIM compliance and how to check the results.

How to create a Component Discover Job for FIM compliance

The following procedure describes how to define and run a new Discover Job that references a PCI-FIM component template.

  1. In the Console, expand the Component Templates folder.
  2. Right-click the appropriate PCI-FIM component template and select Discover.

  3. In the New Component Discovery Job wizard, provide information about the General panel:

    • Name — Type an identifying name for this job.
    • Description — Optional.
  4. * Save in — Click Browse and navigate to the location under the Jobs folder where you want to store this job. To create a new folder from the Select Folder panel, select an existing folder and click Add, and name the new folder.

  5. Click Next .
  6. In the Select Templates panel, verify that the selected component template is correct. The default template shown is the one that you right-clicked at the start of this procedure.

  7. Click Next.
  8. In the Targets panel, expand the Servers folder, select the server smart group that you defined for the PCI FIM program, use the arrow buttons to move it to the right side of the panel, and click Next.

  9. (Optional) In the Default Notifications panel, make selections for when and how you want notifications sent each time this job completes.

    Warning

    Use this panel to set different notifications for the Discover and Snapshot Jobs; otherwise, skip this step and set notifications on the Batch Job.

  10. In the Schedules panel, select Execute Now at the top of the panel.

    Select Execute Now for the Discover and Snapshot Jobs, and then set the desired recurring schedule on the Batch Job._

  11. Click Finish.
  12. Check the results of this first job run to make sure that expected servers and objects discovered properly You might need to change definitions in the component templates to make the process work correctly for your environment.

    Warning

    The contributory component templates for Windows define only Windows 2003 servers. To set this Discover Job to find Windows 2008 servers, you must change the Discover rules in the component template.

To check Job run results

  1. In the Jobs folder, navigate to the Discover Job, right-click the job name, and select Show Results.

  2. In the content editor, click the job run, and select Show Job.
  3. To view a list of discovered targets, expand the Job Run.

  4. If the job shows a yellow warning icon, select Show Log to explore the warning.
  5. If the job results are not as expected, (for example, expected servers are not discovered or expected parts are not listed), review the component template.
  6. In the Jobs folder, right-click the Discover Job and select Open. Click the Templates tab to see the name of the component template that was used in the job.
  7. In the Component Templates folder, navigate to the referenced template, right-click it, and select Open.
  8. Review and fix the Discover and Parts tabs in the Component Template.
  9. Rerun the Discover Job. Continue to adjust the Discover and Parts rules until you are sure that the correct set of objects is discovered.
