Provisioning Solaris servers using a WAN boot  installation

You can use the WAN boot installation method to provision the Solaris operating system over a public network to SPARC target servers.

Before you begin

• A boot server must be installed and running. This server must have a running, licensed RSCD agent.
• An install server must be installed and running. This server must have a running, licensed RSCD agent.
• Both the boot server and the install server must have a web server configured and running.
• The Flash archive must have the RSCD agent installed on it.

To provision a Solaris SPARC target server using the WAN boot program:

1. Create an instance of the Jumpstart WAN Install data store property class. (See Setting-up-Solaris-provisioning.)
2. Provide values for the following properties of the Jumpstart WAN Install data store instance:
   • BOOT_SERVER: The host name or IP address of the boot server.
   • BOOT_SERVER_DOCUMENT_ROOT_PATH: The path to the document root directory of the web server on the boot server.
   • BOOT_SERVER_URL: (Optional) The URL through which the document root directory can be accessed via HTTP. If you do not specify a value, the system uses http://bootServer.
   • BOOT_SERVER_CGI_BIN_PATH: The path to the cgi-bin directory on the boot server.
   • BOOT_SERVER_CGI_BIN_URL: (Optional) The URL through which the cgi-bin directory on the install server can be accessed via HTTP. If you do not specify a value, the system uses http://bootServer/cgi-bin.
   • INSTALL_SERVER: The host name or IP address of the install server.
   • INSTALL_SERVER_DOCUMENT_ROOT_PATH: The full path to the document root directory of the web server on the install server.
   • INSTALL_SERVER_URL: (Optional) The URL through which the document root directory can be accessed via HTTP. If you do not specify a value, the system uses http://installServer.
   • INSTALL_SERVER_CGI_BIN_PATH: The path to the cgi-bin directory on the install server.
   • INSTALL_SERVER_CGI_BIN_URL: (Optional) The URL through which the cgi-bin directory on the install server can be accessed via HTTP. If you do not specify a value, the system uses http://installServer/cgi-bin.
3. Configure the system package type for the Solaris SPARC WAN Boot:
   1. Select Configuration > Provisioning Configurations.
   2. On the System Package Types tab, click Add .
   3. On the Configurations tab, for Operating System Type, select Solaris. Then check WAN Boot.
   4. For Wan Boot Parameters, provide the following information:
      • System package type: The name of the new system package type.
      • Archive Location: The path to the Solaris Flash archive on the install server, relative to the document root directory.
      • Miniroot Location: The path to the miniroot file on the boot server, relative to the document root directory.
      • Wan Boot Location: The path to the wanboot program on the boot server, relative to the document root directory.
4. Create the system package.
5. In the system package, define settings on the Disk Partition, OS Components, Network, and Post-Install Config tabs as described in Defining-settings-for-Solaris-servers.
6. On the Basic Config tab, provide information for Local Settings as you normally would for a Solaris installation.
7. To set up a secure WAN boot installation, for WAN Boot Parameters, select either of the following options:
   • Authenticate Server during the installation: Specifies that the server generates hashing and encryption keys and displays them in the logs. If you check this option, you can select either key type: 3DES (the default) or AES.
      You must use the set-security-key command to set the values of these keys in the OpenBoot PROM (OBP) of the client. (For information, see the Solaris WAN boot installation documentation.)
   • Authenticate Client after the installation (automatically selects Authenticate Server during the installation): Specifies that a trusted certificate is provided to the client. If you select this option, you must manually extract the server and client certificates in the trust store and cert store using the p12split command. (For information, see the Solaris WAN boot installation documentation.)
8. On the Network Config tab, provide information for Local Settings as you normally would for a Solaris installation. For the WAN Boot Network IP, enter the network IP address of the target server. (This field is required for a WAN boot installation.)
9. Provide information about the other tabs of the system package as you would for a Solaris Flash installation.
   On the Finish Script/Agent Install tab, the Install RSCD agent option is not available. (The RSCD agent is part of the Flash archive.) If you specify a post-installation Batch Job or if you select the Push ACL option, the provisioning process executes these actions only if the RSCD agent is installed and running on the Flash archive.
10. Create a provisioning job.
