Minimum hardware requirements
This topic describes hardware requirements for nodes and components in the TrueSight Server Automation environment.
Hardware requirements for nodes installed by unified product installer method
This topic describes hardware requirements for nodes in a TrueSight Server Automation system:
Default Application Server node
The following table lists the hardware requirements for the Default Application Server node running on Windows or Linux:
Physical Memory | Disk Size |
---|---|
|
|
Additional application server node
The hardware requirements for an additional application server node is similar to the hardware requirements of Application Server component. See, Application Server requirements.
Remote file server
The remote file should at least have 6 GB of free disk space. The unified product installer uses installer files of up to 6GB, which are saved on the remote file server computer. Note that the installer files copied to the remote file server, remain there even after installation is complete.
Hardware requirements for the individual components
This topic describes hardware requirements for components in a TrueSight Server Automation system:
TrueSight Server Automation Console and Network Shell
The following table lists the hardware requirements for the TrueSight Server Automation Console and Network Shell installed on the same host computer.
System requirements for the TrueSight Server Automation Console and Network Shell
Operating system | Processor | (Applicable only for the console) JVM heap size (per client instance) | Physical memory (per client instance) | Available disk space | (Applicable only for the console) Display |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Microsoft Windows | Minimum: x86, 1 GHz Recommended: dual-core x86, 2 GHz or greater | Minimum: 1 GB Recommended: 2 GB | Minimum: 2 GB Recommended: 4 GB | 10 GB 1 | 1024 x 768 Minimum 256 colors |
1Disk space required for a running console. Installation of the console and Network Shell requires only 1 GB of disk space.
Network Shell only requirements
This section describes the hardware requirements of Network Shell when it is the only TrueSight Server Automation component installed on a host computer.
Network Shell on any platform requires a minimum of 512 MB of RAM when running. BMC recommends 1 GB or greater.
Installation of Network Shell on any platform requires a minimum of 2 GB of available disk space. BMC recommends 4 GB or greater.
Application Server requirements
System requirements
The following table lists the system requirements for the Application Server.
System requirements for the Application Server
Operating system | Processor | Available disk space |
---|---|---|
SUSE | Minimum: 2 CPUs (each Quad core), 2 GHz | 50 GB |
Red Hat Linux | Minimum: 2 CPUs (each Quad core), 2 GHz | 50 GB |
Windows | Minimum: 2 CPUs (each Quad core), 2 GHz | 50 GB |
Physical memory requirements
The following table provides settings that BMC recommends for physical memory for basic configuration of a single instance of the Application Server on 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.
Operating system | 32-bit | 64-bit |
---|---|---|
SUSE | 4 GB | 12 GB |
Red Hat Linux | 4 GB | 12 GB |
Windows | 4 GB | 12 GB |
Maximum Java heap requirements
For recommendations for the Application Server maximum Java heap size (MaxHeapSize property), see Recommendations-for-Application-Servers-of-type-All.
Application Server and the database server
If an Application Server participates in Application Server cluster and is configured as a job server or config server, then that Application Server must be physically colocated on the same Local Area Network (LAN) as the database server hosting the TrueSight Server Automation schema.
Application Server and the RCP client
The Application Server and the RCP client (TrueSight Server Automation Console) must be located on the same Local Area Network (LAN). Remote users can use the console through either RDP or Citrix from a remote computer to the computer where the console resides.
RSCD agent requirements
This section describes the hardware requirements for the RSCD agent when it is the only TrueSight Server Automation component installed or upgraded on a host computer.
- On a target server where no activities or jobs are running, the Agent needs approximately 4 MB of RAM and negligible CPU consumption.
- The recommended CPU for the Agent is Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2660 v2 @ 2.20GHz or later.
The following table provides the disk space requirements for the RSCD agent on different platforms:
Operating System
Approximate Space Consumed
Recommended Minimum Free Disk Space
Microsoft Windows
45 MB
130 MB
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
315 MB
1140 MB
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
230 MB
850 MB
Ubuntu Linux Server
300 MB
980 MB
CentOS Linux
315 MB
1025 MB
IBM AIX
365 MB
1350 MB
Oracle Solaris
210 MB
680 MB
- In addition to planning for space needed by the agent, consider the amount of space needed in the future for the Transactions folder. The Transactions folder, which is within the agent install directory, contains copies of the BLPackages you deploy on the agent. TrueSight Server Automation stores these copies, by default, in case you want to roll back changes from a Deploy Job. You can change the default behavior by clearing the Allow rollback check box for the associated Deploy Jobs (for more information, see Creating-a-Deploy-Job).
If you:Clear the Allow rollback check box for all Deploy Jobs targeted for the agent computer, the only file written to the directory is the deployment log.
Choose to keep the default setting and leave the rollback files in the Transactions directory for your deployments, the location of the Transactions directory must have enough space to accommodate the large number of rollback files.
- The patch analysis function of TrueSight Server Automation requires the Microsoft XML (MSXML) parser version 6.0 SP2 or later to be installed on the server on which the RSCD agent is installed. You can install the RSCD agent on a computer on which MSXML is not installed, but patch analysis does not function correctly until MSXML 6.0 SP2 or later is installed.
- To mount an agent on a Linux or UNIX server, the showmount command must be available on the server.
File server requirements
A file server must have a minimum of 72 GB of available, nonredundant, disk space. BMC recommends that the file server have 200 GB or more of available RAID 5 disk space.
PXE server requirements
This section describes the hardware requirements of the PXE server when it is the only TrueSight Server Automation installed on a host computer.
A PXE server uses minimal processor and memory resources. Installation of a PXE server on any platform requires 10 GB of available disk space.
Data store server requirements
This section describes the hardware requirements of the PXE server and Data store server when they are installed on the same host computer.
A PXE server and a data store server typically are set up on the same computer, although that configuration is not required. The data store server holds the operating system installation files used for performing network installations of operating systems. Depending on the number of distinct operating systems that you are provisioning, you might need 1 to 10 GB of disk space to hold these files. At minimum, the data store server should have 4096 MB of RAM. In addition, the data store server should have a fast, reliable network connection.
Additional requirements for the data store server vary, depending on whether it is set up on Windows or Linux and whether you are provisioning Windows or Linux to a bare metal server. The following table lists data store server requirements for all possible provisioning scenarios:
Operating system to be provisioned | If data store server is running on | Additional requirements |
---|---|---|
Windows | Windows | None |
Linux | SMB must be running on data store server | |
Linux | Windows | IIS must be running on data store server |
Linux | HTTP server must be running on data store server |
Patch management requirements
Patch Repository Server
For the Patch Repository Server, an initial 50 GB free space is usually adequate. However, the following factors affect this sizing:
- Number of filters that are selected in the catalog
- Number of patches that are available for the selected filters
- Whether or not "Download from Vendor" is selected in the catalog
You might need to allocate more space based on these factors.
Target Server
To deploy missing patches on a target server, the minimum recommended free space on the drive containing the staging directory of the target server is 3 GB. The disk space required during staging depends on the number of missing hotfixes on the server.
Smart Hub and Smart Agent requirements
The following table provides the hardware requirements for the Smart Hub component.
Hardware resources | Minimum | Recommended |
---|---|---|
Processor | 2 (dual core) | 4 (dual core) |
Physical memory | 8 GB | 16 GB |
Disk space | 25 GB | 50 GB |
Smart Agent is a lightweight, optional component. There are no additional processor and memory requirements. With the default log configurations, Smart Agent logs can grow up to 100 MB (10 files of 10 MB each) gradually. Therefore, if you are using Smart Agents, an additional 100 MB of free disk space is required.
Maintenance Server requirements
A Maintenance Server uses minimal processor and memory resources on top of what is allocated to the Application Server.
Hardware resources | Recommended |
---|---|
Processor | 2 (dual core) |
Physical memory | 8 GB |
We also recommend allocating 2 GB heap memory.
