Setting up online patching for Microsoft Office 365, 2019, and 2021

This topic provides an overview of setting up patching for Office 365, 2019, and 2021 in the TrueSight Server Automation and introduces the set of tasks required to prepare for, set up, and execute patch management jobs.

Before you begin

Make sure the following pre-requisite conditions are met:

  • Office update URLs must be reachable on the target server.
The office downloads must originate from the cdn URL which is available on Registry Editor:
    Compute > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Office > ClickToRun > Configuration - CDNBaseUrl parameter value.
The Internet Protocol should fall within the necessary address range for Microsoft Office Online. For more information, refer to Office 365 URLs and IP address ranges topic on the Microsoft Learn site.

  • Group Policy must be configured according to Microsoft's recommendation. For more information on configuration details, refer to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49030.
BMC recommends enabling the Management of Microsoft Office 365 Apps for enterprise.

  • Once the Administrative template files have been applied and the policy configured, users can navigate to ‘Edit Group Policy’ to verify the ‘Management of Microsoft Office 365 Apps For Enterprise’ value.

Apply Microsoft’s Click To Run feature in TrueSight Server Automation

TrueSight Server Automation uses Microsoft's Click To Run feature for updating Office 365, 2019, and 2021. It links all the Office 'Click To Run' patches into a single executable file, namely, noop.exe. However, only one file will be downloaded in scenarios involving an offline downloader or an online catalog with download enabled.

During the Commit phase of the deployment job, noop.exe triggers Office Click To Run, which in turn download and install the most recent patch. TrueSight Server Automation wait until it receives the response from noop.exe. The Microsoft Office Click To Run feature updates Office to the latest version.

Important

Administrators do not have the option to select a specific version for the update.
