Adding a server to the system


This topic describes how to add an individual server using the TrueSight Server Automation Console. When you add a server, you can install an agent on the server at the same time. This topic includes the following sections:

Overview

When you add a server to the system, you have the option of installing an agent on the server by running an Agent Installer Job. Some preliminary procedures are required before you can run an Agent Installer Job. For information about those requirements, see Agent-installation-overview.

When you use this procedure to add a server, the server is added to the system's internal list of managed servers and automatically appears in any smart server groups whose criteria it matches. When you add a server to a server group, the server appears in that group. When you add a server to the Servers node, the server is not added to any server group. If you want to add the new server to a server group, you must explicitly add the server (see Assigning-servers-to-server-groups).

To add a new server, your role must be granted the Server.Create authorization. For more information about granting authorizations, see Access-control-overview.

Note

If you add a new server that contains virtualization management software like vSphere or SCVMM installed on it, TrueSight Server Automation auto-detects that software and treats the server accordingly by populating Virtualization PSIs for them.

Any conflicting use of the servers can result in conflicts, such as deletion of user created Virtualization PSI. The following actions are examples of usage of the servers in a conflicting manner:

  • Using a server that has SCVMM for UCS.
  • Installing conflicting virtualization managers on a server: for example, installing vSphere and SCVMM on the same server.

To add a server from the console

  1. Open the Servers folder.
  2. Right-click the Servers node (the top node in the Servers folder) or any server group. Then select Add Server from the pop-up menu.
    The Add New Server wizard opens.
  3. Provide information for the Add New Server wizard, as described in the following table:

    Add New Server - Properties

    The Properties panel lets you identify the server you want to add and assign property values to that server. Optionally, you can identify the Agent Installer Job that installs an agent on the servers being added.

    Name/IP Address

    A resolvable host name or an IP address (IPv4 or IPv6). After entering this information, click Verify g_v95_Verify.gifto display the properties already associated with this server.

    Notes:

    • The server name must be unique. If you have multiple servers with the same name (as in a multi-tenant environment), use the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the server.
    • TrueSight Server Automation officially does not support the internationalized domain name (IDN) based hostnames.

    Description

    Optional descriptive text.

    Properties

    Allows you to set values for properties associated with this server. For more information, see Setting-values-for-system-object-properties.
    If the server is a VMware vCenter server or IBM frame, you should define values for certain properties that allow the Application Server to communicate with a web service (VMware vCenter) or hardware management console (HMC, for an IBM frame) that accesses the virtual infrastructure. For more details about these properties, see Adding-and-configuring-an-agent-based-vCenter-server or Adding-the-AIX-server-and-IBM-frame-object-to-TrueSight-Server-Automation.

    If agent does not exist, install using Agent Installer Job

    Check to instruct the system to install an agent. Then click Browse g_V95_BrowseIcon.gifto navigate to the Agent Installer Job that installs the agent. For more information, see Creating-an-Agent-Installer-Job.

    Add New Server - Permissions

    The Permissions panel provides an access control list (ACL) granting roles access to any objects created in the system, such as jobs, servers, or depot objects. This panel also lets you preview and push the ACLs assigned to this server.

    Adding an authorization

    An authorization grants permission to a role to perform a certain type of action on this object.

    To add an authorization to this object, click Add Entry g_V95_AddIcon.gif in the Access Control List area. Then use the Add New Entry dialog box to specify the role and authorization you want to add.

    Adding an ACL template

    An ACL template is a group of predefined authorizations granted to roles. Using an ACL template, you can add a group of authorizations to the object.

    To add an ACL template to the job, click Use ACL Template g_V95_TemplateIcon.gif in the Access Control List area. Then use the Select ACL Template dialog box to specify an ACL template that you want to add to this object.

    To set the contents of the selected ACL templates so they replace all entries in the access control list, check Replace ACL with selected templates. If you do not check this option, the contents of the selected ACL templates are appended to existing entries in the access control list.

    Adding an ACL policy

    An ACL policy is a group of authorizations that can be applied to this object but can be managed from one location.

    To add an ACL policy to this object, click Use ACL Policy g_V95_ACLPolicyIcon.gif in the ACL Policies area. Then use the Select ACL Policy dialog box to specify an ACL policy that you want to add to the object.

    To set the contents of the selected ACL policies so they replace all entries in the access control list, check Replace ACL with selected policies. If you do not check this option, the contents of the selected ACL policies are appended to existing entries in the access control list.

    Previewing agent ACLs

    The ACLs you define on this panel can be assigned to the agent that is installed on this server. To preview those ACLs, click Agent ACLs Preview. The Agent ACL Preview window opens. It displays the ACLs defined for this server. ACLs are based on the authorizations and other information currently defined for the roles granted access to this server. The Agent ACL Preview window presents this information in the form of a users configuration file that is applied to the RSCD agent on this server.     Pushing agent ACLs

    You can push the agent ACLs defined for this server by clicking Push agent ACLs. Selecting this option launches an ACL Push Job after this server has been added to the system. For more information, see Creating ACL Push Jobs.

  4. Click Finish.
    The server is added to a server group and it is included in the system's internal list of servers being managed. The server now appears in the list of available servers that you can add to a server group. See Assigning-a-server-to-a-server-group-manually.
