Creating a storage pool
A UCS template can use a storage pool to find an available pair of WWNN and WWPN addresses for a SAN device during provisioning. If a UCS template includes specifications for one or more SAN HBAs, you must:
- Specify a WWNN address at the template level.
- Specify a WWPN address for each HBA.
The combination of WWNN and WWPN addresses together map to a SAN storage.
Although you can specify the storage address for an HBA manually (a WWNN address and a WWPN address for each vHBA), it is often convenient to create a storage pool that contains pairs of addresses. After you create a storage pool, you can specify in the UCS template that the provisioning process should use the pool to find an available pair.
When you create the pool, you can add multiple pairs by keeping the WWNN address constant and varying the WWPN address. Keeping the WWNN address constant ensures that the provisioning process can find a WWPN address for every vHBA (within the same template) because the WWNN address for all vHBAs is the same.
Note that the addresses in the pool are actually allocated during the provisioning process—they are not allocated when you create the UCS template.
Before you begin
Obtain WWNN and WWPN addresses for the storage devices.
