Executing management tasks on Citrix XenServer
You can perform a variety of management tasks when managing a Citrix Xenserver environment, such as starting, stopping, and renaming a virtual machine.
To execute management tasks on Citrix XenServer
- In the Servers folder, navigate to a XenServer host server object and expand the Live node.
Expand the Citrix XenServer server object type and then expand the list of hosts. All virtual machines configured within the host are displayed. The icon for the virtual machine indicates the current status.

Right-click a virtual machine. From the pop-up menu, select any of the management tasks described in the following table.

Start
Starts a virtual machine.
Shutdown
Shuts down the OS on the virtual machine (if present), and then powers off the virtual machine.
Force shutdown
Immediately powers off a virtual machine.
Reboot
Restarts the OS (if present) on the virtual machine. If an operating system is not present, it powers off and then powers on the virtual machine.
Force reboot
Halts and then boots the virtual machine without gracefully restarting the OS (if present) on the virtual machine.
Take snapshot
Convert to template
Converts a virtual machine into a custom template.
Suspend
Stops a virtual machine.
Resume
Starts a virtual machine that has been suspended.
Rename
Renames the virtual machine. You cannot rename a virtual machine by deploying a BLPackage. You must use the Rename ad-hoc action.
Delete
Deletes the virtual machine.
Properties
Displays a read-only view of the virtual machine properties, such as path, status and various start and reboot options.
- When you right-click a XenServer Custom Template, you can select the Delete Template option. There are no management actions available for a XenServer Template.
