Importing servers into the system

You can add multiple new servers to a server hierarchy by specifying a text file that contains a list of server names and properties assigned to each server. You can also install agents on those servers at the same time. To create the text file that lists the servers to be imported, follow the formatting instructions on the Import Servers page.

In addition, you can add existing managed servers to a server group. To create the text file that lists managed servers to be added to a server group, follow the formatting instructions on the Import Servers page.

Overview

When you import new servers into the system, you have the option of installing agents on the servers by running an Agent Installer Job. Some preliminary procedures are required before you can run an Agent Installer Job. For information about those requirements, see Agent-installation-overview.

You can import new servers into the Servers node (the top node in the Servers folder) or a server group. When you import servers into the Servers node, the system adds those servers to its internal list of servers being managed. However, the system does not display the new servers in the server hierarchy so no visible changes occur unless the imported servers are automatically included in a smart group.

After importing servers to the Servers node, you can either manually assign these managed servers to a server group (see Assigning-servers-to-server-groups) or assign multiple managed servers to a server group simultaneously using a text file through the Import Servers wizard.

To import new servers into the Servers node or a server group, your role must be granted the Server.Create authorization. To assign managed servers to a server group, you don't need this authorization.

For more information about granting authorizations, see Access-control-overview

To import new servers

  1. Open the Servers folder and do one of the following:
    • Right-click the Servers node (the top node in the Servers folder) and select Import Servers from the pop-up menu.
    • Right-click a server group and select Import Servers to Group from the pop-up menu.
      The Import Servers wizard opens.
  2. Provide information for the Import Server wizard, as described in the following sections:

  3. Click Finish.
A background process imports the servers in the list. Depending on how you have specified behavior for background processes, either a dialog box displays or the Show background operations icon appears in the lower right corner of the console. Both indicate an operation is running in the background.
When the import is complete, a dialog box tells you how many servers were successfully imported and lists any servers that may have failed to import, along with a reason for each failure.

To assign multiple managed servers to a server group using a text file

  1. Open the Servers folder.
  2. Right-click the server group to which you want to assign the managed servers and select Import Servers to Group from the pop-up menu.
    The Import Servers wizard opens.
  3. In the Import Servers panel, browse to the text file (in CSV format) containing the servers list.
To create a server import text file using a CSV format, use the following syntax:
    • The first line of the file must contain the column header Name.
    • Subsequent lines of the file must contain valid imported server name for each server you want to assign.
The following sample file assigns the existing two managed servers to the server group.

      Name
      ManagedServer_Austin
      ManagedServer_Huston
  4. Select the Add only existing servers to the group option, and click Finish.

    Important

When you select this option, the other options in the panel are disabled and no other actions are performed.
