Running background operations
When you perform an operation that takes a long time to complete, the BMC Server Automation Console offers the option to run the operation in the background.
For example, when you add a software package to the Depot or export a BLPackage, the system offers the option to run the operation in the background.
A dialog box telling you the operation is in progress provides the mechanism for running the operation in the background. If you do not run the operation in the background, the dialog box remains displayed, effectively locking your console. If you choose to run the operation in the background, the system places the operation in a queue with other running operations. You can see these operations in the Progress view.
When a task is executing in the background and you try to close the BMC Server Automation Console, a dialog box informs you that operations are currently running. The operations are canceled if you close BMC Server Automation. The dialog box gives you 30 seconds to make a decision. Otherwise, the system shuts down and background operations are canceled.
To run an operation in the background
When you start an operation that allows you to run it in the background, a progress dialog box gives you the following options:
- Click Run in Background. The progress dialog box is no longer displayed. Instead the Show background operations icon
appears in the lower right corner of the console. It indicates an operation is running in the background.
- Click Always run in background and then click Run in Background. The progress dialog box is no longer displayed. The Show background operations icon appears in the lower right corner. In the future, when you perform any operation that can potentially run in the background, it will. To turn off this capability and set operations to run in the foreground, use Window > Preferences > General > Global. For more information, see Customizing-preferences.
- To display additional information about the operation in progress, click Details. The dialog box expands and shows any background operations that are currently in progress. To cancel an operation in this list, click Cancel operation
.
- If an operation is running in the background, you can click Show background operations in the lower right corner to display a Progress view. When the Progress view is open, you can cancel an operation by clicking Cancel operation.
