Managing UCS systems

From the BMC Server Automation UCS Manager, you can add, delete, start, stop and manipulate various elements of a UCS system. In addition, you can reclaim UCS resources — MAC, UCS Storage Entries, and UUID identity resources.

To perform a management action

  1. Open the Servers folder and navigate to the BMC Server Automation UCS Manager server.
  2. Right-click the server and select Browse.
The BMC Server Automation UCS Manager server opens in the Content Editor, typically on the right side of the console.
  3. Choose the Live Browse tab and navigate to the node or element on which you want to perform the action.
  4. Right-click the node or element and choose the action.
The following table lists the management actions that are available in the BMC Server Automation UCS Manager and the node types for which each action is valid.

Notes

UCS management

Add UCS

UCS node

Valid name/IP for the UCS system and the port number

Server.CaliforniaManager
_UCS_add_ucs

Adds the specified UCS system for management in BMC Server Automation UCS Manager.

Remove UCS

UCS node

None

Server.CAM_UCS
_remove_ucs

Removes the specified UCS system from management by BMC Server Automation UCS Manager. Refreshes the BMC Server Automation UCS Manager node when the action completes.

SSL Configuration

BMC Server Automation
UCS Manager node

None

Server. CaliforniaManager
_UCS_SSL_Config

Enables secure connection with UCS systems.

Profile management

Delete Profile

Profile node

None

Server.Profile_UCS
_delete_profile

Deletes a profile from a UCS, including cleaning up identifies, devices, and servers associated with the profile.

If the profile was associated with a blade, the blade is free and can be associated with another profile later. You cannot delete a profile if it references valid resources. In that case, a wizard starts when you attempt the Delete Profile action. The wizard helps you to:

  • Reclaim addresses
  • Delete devices
  • Decommission servers

Go to Server

Profile node

The profile should have been created by a UCS provisioning action from within BMC Server Automation. The name of the managed server is stored in the description field on the profile.

Server.Profile_UCS
_go_to_server

Scrolls to the managed server in the BMC Server Automation Console.

Power actions

Start Blade

Blade node

The blade must be associated with a profile and must be powered off.

Server.Blade_UCS
_start_blade

Refreshes the blade node when the action is complete.

Stop Blade

Blade node

The blade must be associated with a profile and must be powered on.

Server.Blade_UCS
_stop_blade

Refreshes the blade node when the action is complete.

Start Profile

Profile node

The profile must be associated with a blade and it must be powered off.

Server.Profile_UCS
_start_profile

Refreshes the profile node when the action is complete.

Stop Profile

Profile node

The profile must be associated with a blade and it must be powered on.

Server.Profile_UCS
_stop_profile

Refreshes the profile node when the action is complete.

Association actions

Add Association

Profile node

The profile must be unassociated.

Server.Profile_UCS
_add_association

The target blades or blade pools can be in the same UCS or in a different UCS as the profile. This action refreshes the profile's organization when the action is complete.
If the target blade or blade pool is in a different UCS from the profile, this action copies the profile to the new system, associates it, and deletes it from the source system.

Change Association

Profile node

The profile must be associated.

Server.Profile_UCS
_change_association

The target blades or blade pools can be in the same UCS or in a different UCS as the profile. This action refreshes the profile's organization when the action is complete.
If the target blade or blade pool is in a different UCS from the profile, this action copies the profile to the new system, associates it, and deletes it from the source system.

Delete Association

Profile node

The profile must be associated.

Server.Profile_UCS
_delete_association

Refreshes the profile node when the action is complete.

Add Association

Blade node

The blade must be unassociated.

Server.Blade_UCS
_add_association_blade

Works on target blades in the same UCS as the profile or across UCS . If the source profile is in a different UCS, this action copies the profile over and associates it. The original profile is deleted if it is copied onto another system. This action refreshes the blade node when the action is complete.

Delete Association

Blade node

The blade must be associated.

Server.Blade_UCS
_remove_association_blade

Refreshes the blade node when the action is complete.

Organization management actions

Create Organization

Org node

None

Server.Org_UCS
_add_org

Ensures that the specified org exists on all UCS systems under management. If the org does not exist on a UCS system, this action creates it. If the org exists, this action leaves the org as is.
Refreshes the parent org node when the action is complete.

Remove Organization

Org node

You cannot remove the root org (org-root).

Server.Org_UCS
_remove_org

Ensures that the specified org does not exist on any UCS system under management. If the org exists on a UCS system, this action removes the org and all child profiles and orgs, even if they are associated. Refreshes the parent org node when the action is complete.

KVM viewing

Show KVM Console

Blade node

Avocent components must be installed.

Server.Blade_UCS
_show_kvm_console

Displays the KVM console if the blade has a management interface defined for it. This action does not show the console if you are using an exported Exceed session. In that case, it launches a separate window.

Note: The KVM console requires that the machine running the Configuration Manager console has Java 1.6 installed.

FSM viewing

Show FSM State

Blade node

None

Server.Blade_UCS
_show_fsm_state

Displays the FSM details for a blade. It is particularly useful to see the errors on a blade if it is not responding.

UCS template creation

Create Template

Profile node

None

Server.Profile_UCS_create
_template_from_profile

Asks for a name and location for a UCS template. This action builds a UCS template with the attributes of a selected profile. Some values, such as pools in the UCS system, are not reflected in the UCS template because the UCS template uses its own pools.

To reclaim resources

Note

To perform this action, your role must have the UCSIdentityReclaim.Modify authorization.

  1. Open the Servers folder and navigate to the BMC Server Automation UCS Manager server.
  2. Select the server and choose Actions > UCS Identity Reclamation > Reclaim addressType.
The dialog for the selected identity type (MAC, UCS Storage Entries, UUID) opens.
  3. Perform one of the following actions:
    • Select the address from the Allocated addressType column on the left and click Add Selected addSel.png.
    • Click Select all selAll.png to select all the addresses from the Allocated addressType column on the left.
    • Select the address from the addressType to Reclaim column on the right and click Remove Selected remSel.png.
    • Click Remove All remAll.png to remove all of the addresses from the addressType to Reclaim column on the right
  4. When all items are in the desired column, click OK.
A confirmation dialog appears when all of the selected identities are reclaimed successfully.

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
