Distributing the Atrium Discovery custom configuration object to the managed servers

To enable the discovery and management of third-party software applications on servers on which BMC Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping are set up to gather information, you must run a Distribute Configuration Objects Job. This job distributes the implementation files for the Atrium Discovery custom configuration object to the relevant servers.

Note

Perform this task even if you are upgrading an existing setup of BMC BladeLogic Server Configuration Discovery.

Before you begin

Ensure that all servers to which you want to distribute the Atrium Discovery object were added to the BMC Server Automation system using their short names. At this time, BMC BladeLogic Server Configuration Discovery does not support servers identified using IP addresses or fully qualified names. For example, a target server must be defined in the system using a name like server1 rather than a fully qualified name such as server1.prod.mycompany.com.

To create a Distribute Configuration Objects Job for the Atrium Discovery custom configuration object

  1. To open the New Distribute Configuration Objects Job wizard, do one of the following:
    • Open the Jobs folder and navigate to a subfolder in which you want to create the new Distribute Configuration Objects Job. Right-click the folder and select New > Administration Task > Distribute Configuration Objects.
    • Open the Servers folder and navigate to a server to which you want to distribute the Atrium Discovery object. Right-click the server and select Administration Task > Distribute Configuration Objects.
The New Distribute Configuration Objects Job wizard opens. The wizard is divided into panels, which you step through by clicking Next.
  2. On the General panel, enter a name and optional description for the job, and select a location to save the job.
  3. In the Selected Configuration Objects panel, expand the Global Configuration Objects node under Available Configuration Objects and select the Atrium Discovery object. Click the right arrow to move the object to the right, under Selected Configuration Objects.
  4. On the Targets panel, select the target servers to which you want to distribute the Atrium Discovery object and use the arrows to move servers from the Available Targets list to the Selected Targets list.
The servers that you select must already be set up to allow BMC Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping to gather information from them.
  5. Step through all other wizard panels.
For descriptions of the remaining panels (Default Notifications, Schedules, Properties, and Permissions), see Creating-or-modifying-Distribute-Configuration-Objects-Jobs.
  6. After completing the last step of the wizard, click Finish.
After you run the Distribute Configuration Objects Job for distributing the Atrium Discovery object, you are ready to browse your managed servers and view information about the software applications installed on them, as described in Browsing discovered software applications. Ensure that the new Atrium Discovery node appears under the Live node of each relevant managed server.
