Performing the upgrade
This topic describes scenarios and provides procedures for upgrading BMC Decision Support for Server Automation.

Before you begin
- Review the information in Preparing-for-upgrade and complete all of the relevant tasks described in that topic.
Ensure that you have met all of the system requirements.
- Ensure that databases are configured appropriately. For more information, see Database-recommendations.
- Review the operating systems that are no longer supported on the Product-announcements page.
- Assign the execute permission to the root user on the directory in which you have downloaded the binaries by using the following commands:
chmod +x ./Disk1/setup.bin
chmod +x ./Disk1/files/jre/bin/java - You must upgrade the product from a computer where X server is installed. Follow these steps before you upgrade the product from a computer with X server software:
- Start the X server software.
- Configure the security settings of the X server software to permit remote hosts to display X applications on the local system.
- Connect to the remote system where you want to install the product and start a terminal session on that system, for example, an X terminal (xterm).
Upgrade scenarios
You can upgrade to version 8.9 of BMC Decision Support for Server Automation in the following scenarios:
- Upgrade on supported operating systems
- Upgrade on operating systems for which support has been discontinued
To upgrade on supported operating systems
- Navigate to the Disk1 directory, where you extracted the product installation files.
- Invoke the upgrade program as follows:
- (Windows) Double-click the setup.exe.
- (UNIX) Invoke the upgrade script by using the following command: ./setup.bin
- (Windows) Double-click the setup.exe.
- Use the installation worksheet to complete the upgrade process. The installation worksheet indicates the parameters that you can update or enter during upgrade.
If the upgrade process finishes successfully, the upgrade wizard displays the URL to launch the BMC Decision Support for Server Automation Console. - Click the URL to launch the console.
The BMC Decision Support for Server Automation Console shows the Last Task Details page. - Verify the status of all tasks.
For a successful upgrade, all tasks must be completed successfully. When all tasks have finished successfully, the wizard prompts you to provide the passwords for the databases of all BMC Server Automation sites and includes a Configure Password link. - (Skip steps 6 and 7 if you are upgrading from version 8.8.x to 8.9 and click the Home or Configuration tab) Click the Configure Password link.
The Configure Password page appears. - Provide the existing passwords for all BMC Server Automation sites in the Edit Site siteName Password field.
To upgrade on operating systems that are no longer supported
- If you have not already done so, download and extract the scripts from the bdssa89<servicepackVersion>external-files.zip file.
- Navigate to the BDSSA89<servicepackVersion>drop-platform-support.zip file.
- Extract the BDSSA89<servicepackVersion>drop-platform-support.zip file to a temporary directory on the computer where the previous version of the product is installed.
- From the command prompt, navigate to the BDSSA89<servicepackVersion>drop-platform-support\drop-platform-support directory.
Enter the following command:
nsh drop-platform-support.nsh
The script informs you that if you run the script, the Cognos service will be stopped and ETL cannot be run anymore on this computer.
- Type Y for confirmation.
When you run the utility, the bds.properties file is created in the drop-platform-support directory. This file stores the product configuration of the previous installation. - Ensure that you have extracted the product installation files on the computer where you want to install version 8.9
For download and extraction instructions, see Downloading-the-installation-files. - Copy the bds.properties file that is generated in step 6.
- On the computer where you want to install version 8.9, paste the bds.properties file in the directory in which the installation executable (setup.exe or setup.bin) is located.
- Run the following command on the computer where you want to install the product:
(Windows)
setup.exe -J BDSSA_UPGRADE=true(UNIX)
setup.bin -J BDSSA_UPGRADE=trueIf the installation process finishes successfully, the installation wizard shows the URL to launch the BMC Decision Support for Server Automation Console.
- Click the URL to launch the console.
The BMC Decision Support for Server Automation Console shows the Last Task Details page. - Verify the status of all tasks.
