Oracle database support

This topics lists the supported versions of the Oracle database and BMC recommendations for using the Oracle database.

Supported databases

The following Oracle databases are supported for use with

The macro unmigrated-inline-wiki-markup from Confluence is no longer available.

:

  • Oracle database server 11g Release 2 RAC, via Oracle 11g Release 2 client with the latest patches applied
  • Oracle database server 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition with the partitioning option, via Oracle 10g Release 2 client
  • Oracle database server 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition with the partitioning option, via Oracle 11g Release 2 client
  • Oracle database server 11g Release 2 Standard Edition, via Oracle 11g Release 2 client

Note

IBM Cognos 8.4.1 BI 64-bit application requires third party 32-bit libraries. If you have installed Oracle 64-bit client, you must copy the Oracle 32-bit client libraries (from other 32-bit client installation) in the ORACLE_HOME/lib32 directory. If the lib32 directory does not exist, create it. Version of Oracle 32-bit client (from where you are copying the libraries) must match with the version of Oracle 64-bit client.

BMC recommendations

BMC recommends that you use Enterprise Edition of all Oracle databases. While the product is designed to work with the Standard Edition of these databases, the Enterprise Edition offers the following benefits for data warehousing projects:

  • Better performance when handling large data volumes
  • Use of partitioning for time-based data archival

BMC recommendations for data warehousing also include the use of capabilities that are available in Enterprise Editions.

Oracle Client requirements

DBA privileges (sys account privileges) are required to create tablespaces and users for the reports data warehouse. Only a sys user can grant dbms_lob permission to a user and this permission is required for a data warehouse user.

The following table shows the supported operating system and Oracle installation combinations. This table also includes the database client software requirements for the reports server.
