Overview of database setup tasks

The following table describes the database-related tasks you must perform, depending on your upgrade path.

Upgrade path

When to perform

Requirements

Upgrading from an earlier version of BMC BladeLogic Server Automation (pre-8.1)

Before you install 8.1 SP5

Only if you are upgrading from version 7.6 or version 8.0

The macro unmigrated-inline-wiki-markup from Confluence is no longer available.

Upgrading from version 8.1

After you have installed the 8.1 SP5 Application Server

  1. Download the latest BMC BladeLogic Server Automation External Files item (file name version-external-files.zip) and the latest BMC BladeLogic Server Automation SQL Upgrade Script Package item (file name version_SQL_Update_Scripts.zip) from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website. See Downloading-the-installation-files.
  2. Extract the contents of the version_SQL_Update_Scripts.zip file that you downloaded from the EPD site to a temporary directory on any computer from which you have access to the database server using the SQL*Plus (in case of Oracle) or sqlcmd (in case of Microsoft SQL Server) utility.
BMC recommends that you extract the files close to the root directory of the system. For upgrades, the files can have long names and directory structures, which could exceed the 255 total character limit for a file name (including directory) on Microsoft Windows systems.
  3. After upgrading the application server, run the SQL upgrade scripts as described in Running-the-SQL-update-scripts.  The scripts are available from the latest SQL_Update_Scripts.zip file.

Upgrading from:

  • 8.1 SP1
  • 8.1 SP2
  • 8.1 SP3
  • 8.1 SP3 Patch 1
  • 8.1 SP4

After you have installed the 8.1 SP5 Application Server

After upgrading the application server, run the SQL upgrade scripts as described in Running-the-SQL-update-scripts. The scripts are available from the latest SQL_Update_Scripts.zip file.

Performing a fresh installation

  2. Extract the contents of the version-external-files.zip file to a temporary directory on any computer from which you have access to the database server using the SQL*Plus (in case of Oracle) or sqlcmd (in case of SQL Server) utility.

  3. Execute the schema creation scripts, which are available from the latest version-external-files.zip, which you can download from the EPD site. See Performing-a-fresh-installation.
