Searching server inventory and taking actions on search results


You can search server inventory, identify targets, and then obtain detailed information about each of those targets.

When searching server inventory, you can browse, perform a simple text search, or search all servers using complex sets of conditions based on server properties.

To search inventory and take action

  1. Click Inventory.
    The Inventory View opens.

  2. If you are logged on as a user that belongs to multiple security groups, you must select a group from the Security Group drop-down list at right. 
    Any searches you perform in this procedure will only show results for which that security group has permissions.
    If you do not belong to multiple security groups, the Security Group drop-down list does not appear. 
  3. Use the Inventory View to search your server inventory. 
    The Inventory View offers the following techniques for searching the server inventory:

  4. Select one or more target servers or server groups.

  5. Click Load Selected Targets to display only the targets you have selected.

  6. To view information about a target, roll your cursor over a row and click Details.
    The Target & Info Actions page opens.
  7. Take any of the following actions:
    • Define an operation that acts on the target.
      1. From Available Operations, select an operation.

        The wizard for the chosen operation opens. You can select any type of operations except Provisioning operations. 
      2. Use the wizard to define an operation
        On the Targets page of the wizard, the server you have selected from inventory is automatically defined as the target.
    • Click the Basic Information tab (if it is not already selected) to view key facts about the server, such as its host name and IP address. 
    • Click the Properties tab to show all of the server's properties.

    • Click the Live Browse tab to view a list of the server object types you can browse in real time. Expand any item in the list to see particular server objects. For some types of server objects, such as the file system or a Windows registry, you can navigate a hierarchy of server objects. If the object you select is a VMware vCenter server, you can perform actions on the VMs that the vCenter hosts. For example, you can stop or snapshot a VM.

    At any time you can click Modify Search, which returns you to the Inventory View and displays the list of selected servers.

 

 

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
