Deploying BMC ProactiveNet Agents

Overview

BMC ProactiveNet agents are programs that can be installed on servers and other devices that you want to monitor. Once installed, an agent can collect data such as CPU and memory usage for the host operating system. The BMC ProactiveNet Server can gather this data and use it for analysis.

This use case lets you package BMC ProactiveNet Agents and run a job that deploys the agents to servers managed by BMC BladeLogic Server Automation.

To deploy BMC ProactiveNet Agents

The following table provides an overview of the user tasks involved in this use case. Details for each of the steps are provided in the referenced BMC Software documents, available by clicking the links provided for each step

Description and references

Step 1: Create packages for BMC ProactiveNet Agents

BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management

After logging on to the BMC ProactiveNet Server as an administrator, use a command line to enter this command:

pw blade create packages

The command packages software as custom software packages in BMC BladeLogic Server Automation. The software packages in turn are encapsulated in BLPackages. The command stores both the BLPackages and the custom software packages in the Depot.

Note

BMC recommends that the BMC ProactiveNet Server and the BMC BladeLogic Server Automation Application Server be in the same LAN. Using this procedure to create packages across a WAN may cause the command to time out.

See "Creating packages to deploy ProactiveNet Agents to BMC BladeLogic managed systems" in the BMC ProactiveNet User Guide.

Step 2: Deploy the packaged agents

BMC BladeLogic Server Automation

Create and run a Deploy Job that deploys the packaged ProactiveNet Agents to target servers.

When running the Deploy Job, use smart groups to target the servers requiring ProactiveNet Agents. For example, you might want to group target servers by location, platform, or functionality.

See "Creating a Deploy Job" in the BMC BladeLogic Server Automation Users Guide and "Defining a smart group" in the BMC BladeLogic Server Automation Users Guide.
